At the moment I have 1gig of Corsair XMS2 ram. I'd like to install Vista on my system, simply because it looks pretty. Is 2gig necessary? Will I notice a difference between 1gig and 2 in XP? And finally, should i buy exactly the same stick again?

Yes there is a difference between 1 Gb and 2Gb even in XP but most noticeable when playing games.
All new cpu's should really have ram installed in pairs for best performance. If you only have a single stick then upgrading by buying an identical stick will give you 2Gb and dual channel so should give you a real boost.
Most reviews say 2Gb is required for smooth vista operation. Myself I am waiting to upgrade for a few months until there are DX10 games and all the driver issues are sorted.

I wouldn't build a system with less than a gig of RAM, ideally start with 2, as I can only see things getting more memory hungry...
i run a lot of graphic processing progs and definetly notice a difference in XP after upgrading to 2 gigs.
