ASUS Commando

I require a few opinions on this board please as it looks good and im about to take the plunge into PCI-E

Im not being rude but i dont require opinions on other boards, just ones on this if anyone knows anything either good or bad.

Is this a good board for C2D.

Where does this board fall.
Im not worried about the price of it. Just if there is anything it should have that it hasn't.

Ive been around PC's years but the move to PCI-E is a little daunting at first tbh and i just need to get my facts right.


I have seen a bundle that includes this board.
OCZ 6400 Platinum XTC memory (2x1gb)
E6400 CPU

Does that sound decent enough or should i expect more for a few pounds under £400?

unless you get a duff one, in which case you would RMA it like me. And I can say the replacement is very good.

EDIT: commando does not have sli/crossfire x16, 2 lanes. No HDMI but does not matter. As long is it does not break you will be happy.

Theres 19 pages of opinions on the Commando.

To recap my experience.

Extremely poor build quality, wobbly ram slots, ill fitting coolers, something sticky all round the edges of the board, fussy about ram, fussy about PSUs, buggy bios, doesnt recover well from a bad overclock, cmos wont reset properly using the switch 9 times out of 10, LCD poster shouldnt be at the back of the board, and the thing that irked me the most...............It chirps, whistles, squawks, buzzes under load, like a budgie with tourettes.

And then there were the bad points

He is right but he makes it look terrible. It is not terrible. He is correct in saying the build quality can be poor, the only bad point with my board is that the heatpipes did not have a full thermal contact which is easily sorted, my board is better put together than a ds4 I have tried. But apparently a lot boards are are like this.
My commando seems to be fine with my RAM and psu but every board has it's issues with some components it's just that clunk was very very unlucky.

Another rather annoying "quirk" was that if you test with orthos and it failed, instead of flashing FAILED in red, a BSOD would happen.

So far, every fault / problem that I had, i have been able to find others on other forums with the same.

I admit, I proably was unlucky, with the first board, and the second, I'll see how the 3rd one (in less than a week) goes and report back

I thought that it conflicts with your RAM and psu or has that been sorted?
I have had no BSOD with both of my commandos

It didnt like the ram or the psu, in fact, I think it killed the ram out of spite

I have one of the first delivered Commando's from SCAN which is part of the batch that several people have been unlucky with. Mine works fine, I had problems, but turned out not to be associated with the Commando.

I have run mine at 3Gig only and am not pushing it hard untill I have fixed two computers which have broken that are used by my daughters. As usual I think early adopters suffer... but feel this board has the potential to be one of the great 965 boards.

Custom PC have reviewed it this month - I have the mag but have not yet opened it - too busy with other stuff.

ASUS probably have a great board in the Commando... time will tell, but their QC appears poor, their Web site support is simply rubbish, less than third rate and this is a pity... I am weary because of others problems with their Commando's, but mine so far is good. I think I will continue to be cautious, but hope to run it day in and day out at 3.3Gig and maybe even 3.5 - I am not after a super overclock, but a really good stable, reliable one, which when I have achieved I will stop fiddling and simply use as a fast computer.

Neither, its a 965

Regarding the noises. Both of the boards that Ive had, made the noise, and the last one was quite loud.

I do agree that it has real potential though, if they can fix the quality control issues and come up with a rock solid bios, it'll be a contender, but at the moment, I still prefer the P5B deluxe.
