    Close the death?

Since my PSU just died on me (despite being protected by a UPS and surge protector - see other thread), I was just thinking about what it's going to cost me to build a new system. However, since my system stills handles itself alright, wanted to get an opinion on how much longer it'll remain so especially with new games, vista, etc.

    AMD Athlon 64 3400+
    Asus K8V Deluxe 754 Pin, K8T800
    2x 74.2GB Western Digital WD740GD
    1x 250GB Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 7K250
    256Mb ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    3x 512MB Corsair DDR, XMS3200,

    Mitsumi 16/50x DVD-ROM
LG DVD Supermulti Write Plus GSA4040B

Obviously the newest games are going to be a bit much for my 9800XT with any decent settings, but is it worth upgrading (and getting a new MB and CPU too)? What do you think?

Depends entirely on the games you want to play

Heavy graphical games are going to sqeeze it's nuts, ie Fear Prey etc. If you can do without the eye candy most of the current games would be okay.
It also depends on what type of monitor your using. A 17 inch monitor assuming LCD at 1024 x 1280 or CRT at 1024 x 768 wont push the card too heavy.
M8 of mine was playing COD2 with the same card on a 17inch CRT and it looked fine.
Course if you want eye candy play the upcoming Crysis etc with everything full on then you will have to upgrade.

personally i would wait around a while & save some cash. ATI are brining out a new graphics card range, N-vidia are releasing lower end 8-series cards and AMD are yet to bring thier core2duo competetor. I would just buy a new PSU that will be good for the future (650W or so) and save up for a few months.

but thats just what i would do... its really up to you

Word on the street is late Q3 for this, I was going to wait but I can't wait till October for a new PC, and by that time the second gen C2d will be in abundant supply and wouldn't surprise me if it trashes AMD's new proc.

My point is if you have something that works and you're reasonably happy with it then its maybe worth waiting just to see what happens. Your probs right Intel probs is just going to carry on trashing AMD but the world of computers does have a way of suprising people.
