    My Athlon Xp 1800+

Alright... I have an Athlon 1800+ on my Epox 8RDA3+ mobo..
i was wondering if anyone could help me with overclocking...
For some reason when i put the multiplier up it seems to do nothing... for example i sat it on 24 and there was no difference..
I have herd of several 1800 + 's going at fairly high speeds and was wondering if anyone had ideas to help me achieve them

At the moment i have the following settings.. FSB 137 and Multiplier 11.5 and Voltage 1.6

Yeah so any help would be nice.....

I think you should put up the FSB up by a small amount, and reduce the multiplier, or at least that's how i did mine. I don't think that you should be putting the multiplier up to 24 though!

It's the FSB speed that will really increase performance

The multiplier is locked on your CPU.

Depending on the packaging, it might be unlockable.

    What core is it?

That sounds like a palomino to me, which has to be unlocked with silver paint, check the core and the codes on the chip.
    My 1800+ hit 2.3Ghz in a 8rga+ (t'bred "B" jiuhb dlt3c)

No, you CAN change the FSB, you CAN'T change the Multiplier.

Silver paint is conductive ink that is used from connecting certain bridges which effectively unlocks the processor and allows you to alter the Multiplier.

firstlly, there is NO point in unlocking or even attempting to overclock a palimino. tbh a large increase (very unlikely with a pallly) will not be THAT noticable in games in raw FPS and only benchmarks really... its worth the effort with other cpus but not with pallys.

pallys run very hot aswell with stock temps of almost 50c with good cooling (slk800 25cfm fan).
pallys have stock voltage of 1.75 leaving very little, or no room for increasing it.
pallys were never released with stock speeds past 1662mhz (xp2000+ iirc) which is almost 1ghz lower than some tbreds have reached.
pallys very rarley get over 1.72ghz.

if yuo aregoing to attempt unlocking it make sure you have a magnifiying glass of soem kind, i used a 20x magnification one and it was still very difficult. use tip ex/correction fluid for filling the larsercut holes as its easy to remove and easy to put on properly in the right place - it works. use silver conductive paint or i think halfords sell something you can use instead but i forgot what its called.
i tryed joining the L1 bridges first - messued up using superglue and scraping it off with a knife ruined the ridges so i had to use L3 and L4 to set the multi instead. this is harder as you also have to break bridges and make sure you get it right. its v difficult to change the multi again by changing the l3/l4 after youve done it once so make sure you get it right the first time.

using the fsb to o/c is much easyer though it wont be much if any faster. pallys are slow and wont make much if any use of the etra bandwidth - not that athlons really use/need much anyway. if your mobo has a via chipset then you will have problems with the pci and agp speeds being out of spec if you increase the fsb too much which could cause hdd coruption and lock ups.

    A T'bred "B" is what you're after, the prefferred ones are 1700/1800's jiuhb dlt3c/dutc and the 2100+ aiuhb's.
These should be reasonably easy to find 2nd hand quite cheap, but I have no idea about how the new ones clock.

Whats the difference between a T'bred and a Barton??... Is it worth the price gap for the Barton?

And does anyone know of a good seller of parts in Australia??

No idea about aussie sellers, but the Barton has more cache than a t'bred.

T'bred's have half the L2 cache (256k cf 512k) of a Barton making Bartons slightly faster at the same clock speed.
If you want cheap cheap, try one of the Applebred Durons, they can clock quite well, and are excellent value for money.

applebred durons can be un locked to full tbreds iirc. i think that can be done with just a pencil aswell no need for paint

all bartons after week 39 are locked and there is no way to unlock them. doesnt matter if your mem and mobo are good but i doubt your mobo will go much past 220fsb what mem have you got?

Most Bartons after week 39 are locked, but not all. I have a week 40 AQZFA that is unlocked. There are unlocked ones out there, you just need to do some research as to which ones are unlocked and find where they can be obtained.
