    New Killernic K1

Killernic have announced a new nic card, same as before but a bit slower (333 vs 400 Mhz) and without the 'K' heatsink. Best part is... its $100 cheaper /sigh now I have to decide between vista or that...

Beer would get my vote, you can get plenty of hardware nics for that price I cant see how it can be good enough to justify the price tag. I cant even notice the difference between 50 and 150 ms half the time, although admittedly i dont play 'twich' games anymore (cs is pretty lame, and the only other one worth bothering with is q3a, which i only ever play at lans.)

Killer NIC is a pointless waste of time. If you are worried, get a decent server class NIC - much better.

so they downclocked it and took the heatsink off? so that was a hundred dollar heatsink?

also why on earth isnt it called "Killer NIC K1" has it ceased to be a network interface card now?

I don't care!! Its $100 cheaper, thats what I care about!! and is now in the approx £75-100 bracket which for an item which will last a good few computers I can certainly stomach.

I was under the impression server class nics were optimised for bandwidth over latency? Though if there is something thats as good, at much lower price, obviously I am interested and may end up with vista and brand x nic!! bonus.

    100 bucks for a NIC ?

    LOL

I was still using my 3COM 3C905C card, but now have a Gigabit Port on my new Mainboard.
To be honest, 10 buck or more for a NIC is crap.

    bandwidth over latency....

    this is kinda bull****.

Fact of the matter is, most still use the same ring buffers, which dont tx until they are told too. Then off they go. That simple.

Then again last time i wrote a network driver it was an 8bit micro (PIC ) using an rtl8319.

But save your pennies, get a high end server card by all means. Buying that you might as well spend it on beer, at least you will have something to show for it.

I am kinda interested in this too,

price has come down to a reasonable level.

If someone could suggest an alternative I am all ears though. Loads of people have said get a server NIC but no one has actually explained what or why.....

Put your money where your mouth is guys.

Server NICs are built to be operating 24x7 without fail - so higher quality. They also tend to perform better, due to having dedicated chips instead of using the host (ie the CPU)

these things seem to get an awful lot of bad press

people will pay the extra £200 for a highest-end graphics card for the sake of a couple of frames per second, so is there really anything wrong with doing the same for a network card?

    or even £500...

I think i'm going to get one of these things, seems vista 64 won't support other bits in my system yet anyway, atleast properly and I am not sure my liver could withstand That and I'm patiently waiting for XSOS over vista... I think anyway now.

    Decisions.

I'll let you know what I think in a few weeks!

    Hi,

I work for Bigfoot Networks (we make the Killer M1 and K1)

Honestly, I would wait on Vista. It has alot of potential, but there's tons of minor problems with it, not the least of which is finding drivers for most hardware.

Even finding video card drivers that function at a performance level available under XP is difficult.

Give it a few months till the kinks are worked out. That's pretty typical of every windows release I've been through.

Quote Originally Posted by dave87 View Post

Server class NIC's are generally more expensive than Killer, and try finding one with UDP priority (for games). 99% of them are optomized for TCP (downloading and web browsing). The other 1% that can be customized to provide UDP boosts cost $500+ and don't provide the other functions available with Killer (such as the windows bypass).

Fact of the matter is you've done zero research into how the Killer functions and are making assumptions based on standard NIC architecture.

With modern internet connections (IE broadband), and other technology upgrades (better routers, servers, etc) it becomes more and more obvious that windows operating systems introduce lag all by themselves.

Not just from sloppy TCP/UDP settings but from the pause between network pings while the network stack cycles itself through a host of useless data before bothering to send out its next network cycle.

So regardless of whether you have a good ping or not, even regardless of whether killer actually improves your ping number; the largest boost comes from the removal of the pause BETWEEN those pings. The time it takes for windows to process the information and play with itself before it gets around to sending that data back out.

Remove the windows network stack from the equation, prioritize UDP instead of TCP and take the entire network process load off of the CPU and what you get is the potential to boost FPS, the potential to lower ping, but more importantly you get a smoother display and faster feel in response as your games broadcast and recieve actions whether windows is ready or not.

We get bad press from people who have never tried one, or simply can't afford it.

The reality is, $1000 video cards exist for a reason. There is a high end PC market for parts that function better than average.

Killer is an entirly new way to broadcast over a network, and it will take time for the masses to even understand how it actually works.

But as every reviewer has noted, you really can feel the performance differance. Debate the value all you want, I can't defend the price; thats a function of development costs, manufacturing costs and retail markup so that retailers can make a profit. But the bottom line is, this isnt 10-20 year old technology being mass produced like other network cards.

This is a linux CPU on a PCI card that completely changes the way you interact with the network and breaks every rule in the windows networking rulebook to provide a boost in online gaming that has simply never been available before.

And? Why shouldn't we respond? Do I post lies about your companys products all over the web?

You want to bash a product you have no experience with?

99% of the crap I read about Killer is from people who don't even have a clue how it works.

Do you know how many dozens of Killer's we've given out to reviewers? Do you realize how many independant people have confirmed our results?

Yet we get flamed, for what? Trying to reduce lag in online gaming?

I don't make these posts to get into arguements. I just want to clear up the misconceptions and answer anyones questions.

At least we aren't hiding who we are either, we announce who we are before makeing these posts.

Now, you want a civil discusion? or a flame war?
