    Onboard Vs old graphics card

Would i see much a difference between these two? The onboard with 256mb of ram given to it (i dont think i could spare 512)

The integrated ATI Radeon™ X700-based graphics engine provides the 3D rendering power needed to accelerate the Windows Vista™ desktop and delivers a great gaming experience out of the box."

or what i have at the moment

The 6600GT is faster in pretty much all circumstances, and can do SM3.0

The 6600GT chipset knocks the X700 series into a cocked hat; also bear in mind that the onboard memory on your 6600 is GDDR3 (so quick), as opposed to filched system RAM (so dodderingly slow). You do however have a problem, in the sense that if you're building an LGA775-based system (I assume Core2Duo), then AGP support is pretty much limited to ASRock's AGP/PCI-E Via-based hybrid boards.

You don't need to spend a lot to go PCI-E; 7600GTs are well under £100, and the GDDR3-equipped versions of the 7300GT are also pretty good, and they can be had for under £60 (make sure that they ARE the GDDR3 versions, not the GDDR2 ones).

You could go the one down (E4300) on the CPU and overclock it anywhere up to about 3ghz if you feel confident enough to do it.

Any reason for getting the lower latency ram? maybe not worth it. bettter spending that couple of quid elsewhere

Would maybe try and go above 500w for future proofing

That Fatal1ty stuff in in the whole a bit of a fad. Just rebranded with pretty colours. And you wouldnt be able to ulitlize the fullspeed of your RAM with that model

Id say these are better options. The first one would save u a few quid but i think the second is commenly regarded as a bit better (personally i find asus quite frustrating)

i dont think that cooler is quite as quiet as you think it is. 22dB is not that great for something so expensive. You could save another few quid and go for the arctic cooler freezer pro 7. Very quiet and performs just fine. Have a look
on another recent discussion related to passive CPU coolers, the conclusion was made that this is the way to go.

Sorry to rip you apart a little there... hope it helps

Got the artic cooler on my new storage box It is very quiet indeedy do...

With the ram i could save a few quid...

the PSU will be enough and lets hope aidanjt doesnt poke his nose in I know what he will say ^^. If i get a proper Gfx card i would get a slightly better PSU.

    Had a look at the:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=437659

Gigabyte board... Ive got trust in ASUS as everything ive got from them has not broken... but the stuff being made in the factory in China have been having faults though i heard :S

Suppose i can go for the 4300, but also can the artic cooler 7 fit in the Akasa Zen case? or i could just get another eclipse lol

That motherboard looks good! good thing about these Gigabyte baords is that they use all solid capacitors (just makes them more relaible) iv used the freezer with the zen case, it fits fine as long as u take off the wind tunnel. The zen case is pretty roomy so dont worry about any size restrictions.

Your probs right about the power supply it will be enough but make sure the graphics card you get doesnt need an external power plug

I'd also say, if you want a non-agp graphics card, sell the 6600gt on ebay

    http://search-completed.ebay.co.uk/s...ftrv=1&guest=1

That should offset the cost of a pci-e card a bit, between £30 and £60 .

    Har har

If I was building a low-end PC for a spot of gaming and dabbing in Linux I'd get this stuff:

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU
    Gigabyte GA_M57SLi-S4 nForce 570 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM
    Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU Ultra-Quiet CPU Cooler - Retail
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
    Tagan TG420-U01 420W ATX2.0 Silent PSU
    BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Comes to a total of £470, quick price on OCuk, although I don't recommend buying from them, I just leach bandwidth from their site for picking/ general pricing stuff and look elsewhere when doing the shopping

Anyhow, that'd do great in Linux, you could even beef up the PSU if you plan on adding another 7600GT sometime in the future, and if you feel ballzy enough you could even put the LinuxBIOS on the motherboard

*edit* Actually, now that I think about it, thats a pretty decent system, I'd probably go along the lines of that myself but beef up the case, cooling, PSU, and maybe the GPU.

Nice idea. See very little point in the SLI though. In a months time when the 8600Ultra comes out that will probs be as powerful as 2 7600GTs and overall cheaper

I agree, though it is a current option. Actually the 8800 GTS is pretty cheap, but still going way over budget, am I right?
