thinking of upgrading - is this worth it?

    i have an ASRock K8 Combo-z with 754 pin Athlon 64 3000+ processor and 1024mb memory

i understand this motherboard also has a 939 pin cpu socket that can be used with dual channel memory and wondered if i could get much increase in performance by using this

is it worth investing in a 939 pin cpu with this motherboard and if so, which one?

    and

what benefits would dual channel memory give?

Personally id say save up and upgrade to core2duo, socket 939 will be dead soon. Unless u can get a great deal on a cheap chip id say dont bother.

S939 are typically 0-20% faster than their S754 counterparts of the same clock speed thanks to dual channel memory, the main benefit I see is a dual core chip if your board has a firmware upgrade for them.

If you already have the riser board for S939 and a dual channel kit then picking an X2 chip up off ebay would give a nice performance boost, selling your old S754 chip would also help lower the actual cost, you'll probably get about £20 for the chip and an X2 anywhere from £60 upwards.

Little point going from s754 to s939 or AM2 in my opinion. Would be much wiser to grab a new motherboard, chip, RAM and video card if necessary, and get an essentially new rig if you're going to upgrade. If you're happy with what you have, then just sit tight until you need an upgrade.
