Lapping a Conroe e6600. Would you?

Would you overclock your conroe even if it validates your warranty?

This is one of the problems i'm having with my e6600... It is/was worth £200 odd and i guess it'll be hard to sell if i do sell it.

I know temps will be miniscule but idle temps according to TAT are around 49-53c

If the CPU had no warranty to begin with, then maybe, but otherwise, no, its pointless.

If it needs lapping, send it back under warranty.

My E6600 reported temps as much higher than any other chip Ive had at the same volts, so take the temps with a pinch of salt. Touch the heatsink when its under load, if its hot, worry a bit, if not, dont

Do you mean lapping or overclocking?
Lapping is grinding down the heatspreader for better contact with the heatsink (to my knowledge)

Overclocking is pushing the core frequencies to get a better speed.

Answer= I wouldn't lap my E6400, as i'd probably do more harm than good.

I have overclocked my E6400 and am pushing it further and further, i would do the same with an e6600.
If you overclock then get a new heatsink, at least an AC7 sink, they are good for £10.

Thing is my temps are not under air but custom watercooling so temps like i stated previously are much higher than what i expected.

Plus i don't know where/who to take the COPU back to.. and would they say yes to a swap if i just said the CPU needs lapping. Don't i need a valid reason?

edit: When i overclock my e6600 to say 3.8Ghz, 1.6v. idles at 60c and load barely touches 80 according to TAT/Core Temp

Check your cooling...
Tell them the chip is overheating like mad and you haven't even touched the clocks... how old is it?

erm.. IIRC the CPU was purchased on 18/08/2006 from Scan (looking on online invoice) so it would be just over half a year old.

How longs the warranty on these CPU's anyways?

I'm on good watercooling too, and my temps were awful. I was beginning to doubt my watercooling and I tried a different CPU and it was the E6600 reporting the temps wrong.

Easiest way to see if the cpu is uneven, is to put a very small blob of arctic silver in the centre of the cpu, then tighten your waterblock onto it, take it straight back off carefully, there should be a perfectly compressed circle of arctic silver. If there are any dips or anything in the core or the block, youll see the marks in the arctic silver.

If you need to rma the cpu, you can do it though Intel.

i think you mean invalidates/voids warranty. i would use the conroe till the warranty runs out, then overclock it. i mean it is pretty fast as it is isnt it?
i got my opteron overclocked and the weird thing is it goes up to 35C at load. nothing above that. but yet my x2 4200 goes to 60C at load. is that weird or just normal?

wouldn't you just clock the hell out of it until its warranty runs out, then if it brakes, just say you didn't touch the speeds?

not really, id clock a considerable amount that wont shorten the cpu's lifespan greatly. anyway maybe they might have mechanisms or something that can detect if the cpu has been overclocked, who knows.

overclocking is good with or without warranty on some cpu's, better performance per pound.
