fair enough, but I bought an E6300 before the E4300 was out and I must say I should have wait a little.

Water cooling not an option for me

Didn't see the kind of speeds though, any links?

Wow, looks like changing the FSB I can achieve the same kind of speed as a E6600. I think you may have just changed my mind

Well I think it's the good choice but I never tested it as I bought my E6300 in January and there's no point changing. I actually struggle to go past 2.9. With the E6400 you may also reach 3.2 easily but with water cooling (in the future) you could push it to 3.6 probably. Well the choice is yours to make !

Okay thanks for that, I think I'm going get the E6300. It's only £8 more that the E4300 and it looks like you can get slighlty better results in overclocking.

Sorry misunderstanding here... I told you I regret I bought my E6300 and didn't wait for the E4300. You need very good components to overclock E6300 past 3GHz. I said choose between E6400 or E4300. But E4300 platform is cheaper to buy! Hope that clarifies everything !

My E4300 overclocks better than my E6400, not by very much, but it does allow for extra memory tweakage because the chipset isnt as stretched.

If you go with an E6300, you will need faster ram to acheive the same overclock as with the E4300.

Personally, if it were me, I would get the E4300 over the E6400 or E6300.

You have gone with pc2-6400 ram, which will give you (in theory) an overclock of 3.6ghz on the E4300, 3.2ghz on the E6400 and 2.8ghz on the E6300.

I just ordered the OCZ platinum stuff, looks awesome and great bang-for-buck.
Get a 6400 if you can afford it.

Yeah, but then you can OC a 6400 upto a 6600 speed. (and well above).

I haven't read the differences between the E4400 and the 6400 but i'm sure if the 4400 is cheaper, there is a disadvantage. Whats the l2 cache?

The E4300 has a 9x multi meaning that you can overclock higher without needing to shellout for faster ram. It also has an 800fsb as opposed to the 1066fsb of the E6x00 chips. E4300 has 2 meg cache, the difference being that the E6300/E6400 have 4 meg cache with 2 meg disabled, whereas the E4300 hasnt had its bits chopped off. It doesnt make any difference anyway, as far as I can see. Oh and the E4300 doesnt have "Virtualisation". Face, bothered?

The L2 cache is 2MB, the same on both (however, the newer 6320 and 6420 due for release April-ish will have 4MB).

The links posted above show you just how well the £4300 overclocks, so in most cases it is preferable to the more expensive 6400.
