what do you think of xps laptops?

im thinking of selling up desktop and getting an xps laptop, either a gen 2 or the one above, only differnce is the 6800 ultra > 7800 gtx. they work out around the 800 mark.

do you think they are good products? it would probably wouldnt replace my desktop, but i want something wher ei can game anywhere type thing, and love the look of the machine!

just wondering if there were any things i should be aware of.

as a double check.. the 6800 ultra should run hl2 fine??

    thanks guys

the 6800 ultra is fine for HL2.

I've not seen many of these older ones around but i'm sure they are half decent.

I like the new (ish) m1710 and i love the little m1210 so if they are anything to go by then the older ones should be great.

If you watch the today onlys on scan (maybe make a request to themanwhocan@scan.co.uk) the scan Anaconda pops up every now and again for around £900

Thats 2.2ghz amd dual 7800 gtx sli and 1gb of ram..

Should be good for a half decent gaming laptop.

Dell lappys actually look good in the flesh, pictures don't do them any justice at all.

Go for the card you can best afford. IMHO i would advice you to spec out to the max you can afford as upgrading later on can be a very expensive business.

Go for the lowest memory and buy 3rd party, works out cheaper that way.

    Happy buying.

arbitor, if you look on hotukdeals there is a code giving you 10% off on all XPS systems (except the XPS 210).

    Might be useful .

I like dell laptops...nothing wrong with them...and the support is (after a slightly long and annoying phone call ) fantastic.

I've used the 640m and the xps M1210 recently. Both great little laptops compared the HP's we normally get in which are crap imho.

    A Dell inspiron 1000 i think.
Obviously celeron processors degrade alot, but this was sub standard when i bought it. It takes ages to start up, its loud, slow and unresponsive.

Dell customer service is crap, from what i've heard.

Almost everything they sell is overpriced. Go price up one of their systems, it's 99% of the time more expensive than retail components, let alone wholesale.

I've used dell basic onsite support a few times for various laptops at work.. You call them...they diagnose the problem (it can take a while but its worth it) they come out the next day...laptop is fixed. There is nothing wrong with dells customer service in my expierence. Compared to RTB warranties which can be horrific.

    Celeron...Tut

I wont defend the lower end dells because i've never used one lol. But they do make decent laptops.

Seriously try..an HP ..a sony.. for a long period of time like I have and you wont be happy with any of them. I have all three..the dell is the oldest (about 6 years old at least) and by far the most reliable. The sony has caused me some problems but isn't bad. The HP...dont get me started...they are terrible and im glad its works and not mine.

My point being all laptops..all PC's have problems but dell's are well supported and generally quite good.

Well, i don't really like laptops anyway, so i wouldn't get another. But i won't be buying anything from dell, except possibly a monitor, but even they are pricey.
