Norton Ghost 2003

Just got my new HD, so im wanting to copy over all the info from my old HD, C drive to my new partition on the new drive.

I cloned the partition using ghost 2003, and have set the new partition to an active boot drive. BUT!!! When i boot from the new drive, it gets to the windows XP screen, blue backgorund with XP logo. (The screen, just before it switches to the login screen). and hangs.....

I can't seem to find a way around why its doing this or how to resolve it. Any Suggestions?

I really can't be bothered with the faff on of reinstalling winblows and apps at this time of year. Im rushed off my feet as it is.

Was the other drive still attached in the system when you booted for the first time on the newly ghosted drive?

I'm a 2k man and dont work much with XP.

Ghosting is an effective tool if the hardware remains the same. If your new HDD is different make & model to your old then you will *most* likely encounter BOSD issues on bootup due to it not being in the driver base.

*possible* solution around it:

(1) Is to boot up with your old drive and have the new one attached, it should then setup the new drive and have it in its driver base when you ghost it across.

(2)Boot up with Windows XP CD and see if theres an option for you to "Upgrade" your current OS to Windows XP, this should then migrate your settings to a a "new" install of XP with all accounts/settings and priogrammes maintaned, you just need to reinstall drivers and patches again (I've done this many times in Win2k, but not 100% sure on whether this option is available on XP).

Just a suggestion, so not guaranteed to work.

Use of sysprep may resolve the issue but there are specific commands that you would need to define when running sysprep to do pnp on first boot, but IIRC sysprep also deletes the SID and creates a new one upon bootup - not very useful if the primary objective is to maintain the account & profile settings.

Tried booting from the Windows XP CD and repairing the installation... It throws an error at 39minutes remaining. Whether this is my CD or not i dunno but i've used the repair option before...

dunno what to try now. Might have to give it a clean XP install

Did you try option number (1) ?

Its looking more like that this is a driver issue since you can't even boot into safe mode as the hdd has'nt been intialised for that image. I know it'll prolly take an hour to re-ghost, but an hour worth spending (or wasting) IMO, just boot with youir old drive and hook this new one up as slave, Windows should setup the new drive and then reboot to finalise, just re-ghost after that.

Have you tried booting up via the WinXP cd and selecting repair, then using chkdsk /r from the command prompt "if you can call it that"

It wont complete the repair... it throws an error

chkdsk /r might actually work, thinking about it. i think my dad had a similar problem last year.....

they both are... SATA 120gb maxtor and a SATA 250gb maxtor
