Asus Commando SLI or not?

Just looking at the ASUS Commando (seems decent and im struggling to spend my money).

It says however, on the specs that its a Crossfire board (ATI right?)

So does this mean that i cannot use my 8800GTS as its nVidia.

I have also read that some of the Abit Crossfire boards can use a bios update to make them SLI compatible. Would that be a likely case here aswell?

Jeeeeeeeeezzzzz....i thought i was PC savvy but im so far behind now that its a real struggle and i dont wanna waste £400.

Sorry and thanks for any help offered!

I thought that about ABIT boards..that they could be changed to SLi.. its pretty unfounded though I think.

You can use one GTS in the board just not two.

I think the only way SLi would work on a crossfire board is through hacked drivers (in a similar way to how it works on non-sli boards with the correct PCIe sockets)

I think the best option would be to get a single GTX if you want an increase in performance, or as mike said, just use a single GTS (both will work on their own)

there are currently no drivers that allow 8800s in SLI on an Intel chipset.

Single is fine though.

I am totally lost.
Like i said, i last built a new machine with an LGA775 3.0ghz and AGP.

I have read the thread and am more confused than before now

Would you actually say this board is decent or not. I can see you use it but are you happy?

Also, in the pics in CPU-Z you core only reach about 3400mhz if i remember correctly. How come? I thought it was core x 2. Even at stock, shouldnt that say 4200 or close?

God......i think i'll stick to PSUs in future...i know about them

Everything else i already have.

Just the board now and everytime i make a decsion there is something that puts me off.

These are the boards i like:
Asus Commando <--- My favourite but i cant see the problems
AW9D-MAX <---Very mixed reviews
Abit AB9 Quad GT <--Dodgy bios apparently

I wont spend more than £140 but i want to spend as much of that £140 as possible to get as near the top as i can.

(This is very embarassing asking so many questions Sorry! )

The P5B Deluxe Clunk mentioned is still a very good board - mate switched from a 650i based board to it, (effectively going backwards interms of newness) and has been happy since

I dont use it anymore, I returned the 3rd one and got a refund. In my opinion, the commando is good on paper, but has too many problems. The build quality is terrible.

The P5B deluxe wifi is a good solid board and it overclocks well. I'm not sure about SLI, it isnt designed for SLI as one of the PCI-E slots is locked to 4x.

How come you need SLI, have you already got two cards?

Yup, P5B Deluxe Wifi is a great board and within your budget.

Very mature board with virtually ever little kink ironed out of it and it reaches some nice FSBes.

SLI/Crossfire is completely useless IMO.

Have had setups of both (2 x 7800GTs and 2 x X1950XTX) and was completely and utterly un-impressed with how many games do not benefit from it and in some cases, actually run/look worse with dual gfx cards.........and I have a 30" screen, so should see the benefit of it.

Buying the fastest card available is normally enough to drive most games at serious resolutions and normally cheaper then 2 of the "next step down" cards.

Your best option if what you want is an SLi Motherboard for that kind of money is this i suppose..

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=550174

but all the 680i boards are coming down to around £160 now.. spend the extra if you want SLi get a PB5 if you dont..

job done.
