Laptop of Warcraft
Hi guys,
A mate of mine who commutes by train is tempted to get a laptop specifically to play World of Warcraft via a 3G data card. I personally have no use of laptops so can't advise him, but his spec is:
1/ Cheap as possible.
2/ Can run World of Warcraft.
Now I know all those cheap Intel integrated graphics machines won't cope from desktop reviews I have read, but want to now what people have successfully played on.

warcraft via 3g datacard.
hope he's not on 02 £3 a meg :O_o1:

thats seriously not healthy!!

Please post the min specs for warcraft and I will make a suggestion.

funny google told me
glad i have nothing better to do than search for info on other folks games
The minimum system requirements for World of Warcraft are as follows:

Bloody hell ... Even the new Intel onboard graphics will meet that requirement. So any current laptopt including current Celeron budget models will be fine.
-
i would still recommend something with a discrete card reather than integrated
-
Has your friend got a budget in mind? Would make it all better to recommend.
I personally have a Dell XPS M1210 and find it awesome - with the built in 3g card etc. But your friend's budget might not stretch to that range.

I was hoping someone would say "I have a such&such laptop that only cost XXX and it plays fine." but I guess I will just try and give an idea of what the game requires.
I don't think he has a specific budget, but I get the impression if one of the cheapo Dells would run it he would jump, but he wouldn't stump up 1000+ quid for one of the really good laptops.
That minimum spec for the game seems a bit too minimum. He has an old Shuttle that he plays on at home; I think it is a Barton 2500 cpu with an old AGP Geforce 3 Nvidia card. He plays at fairly low res and it gets choppy wandering around towns despite him having twice the fill rate of an integrated 6150 chipset.
My wife plays with an Nvidia 4200Ti AGPx8 128MB and that is fine at 1280x1024 albeit with quality turned down quite a bit. Her CPU is an Athlon 64 2800+ on socket754, so any mobile Turion or equivalent would certainly be enough.
The graphics does matter as well, you want the draw depth pushed out as far as possible to see what/who is around you. With a 7900GT and all the options maxxed out it can be nice to sometimes just sit on a hill and watch the sun go down :)

that would probably be good for him
I have run CS:S on much worse than that at 1280 x 1024 and medium gfx settings if that helps.. dont play WoW though

In that case you could go for one of the laptop with a Nvidia 7600 g-string or something ... Seen as asus one around £800 but with AMD Turion processor rather than Core2 Duo.
It will be handle the job, and comes with a 17" screen.
But personally I wouldnt currently buy anything that did not have a Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor.

You can run WoW on pretty slow hardware, it isn't hugely demanding if you don't ramp the resolution up massively.
My brother occasionally plays on one of those mobile AMDs (Turino) with a GeForce GO 6-series gfx card.....it seems to eat it for breakfast.
Although, playing WoW on the train (on the way to/from work I presume?).......seems a little hardcore, I guess he's saving for that epic flying mount :p

Its to go on a train...17"? dont think so..

Hmm, perhaps he should check ebay for something with a 6600go then.
I did have a look around for 7600go machines, but they seemed a tad pricey. I think I couldn't find a machine with just the graphics upgraded, it was better than the cheap stuff in every way (which is probably not that useful to him, he just wants the graphics).
And you are spot on Shaithis, he is indeed saving for his epic mount :D

Out of interest, what tarrif is he using on his 3G card? I would imagine playing over 3G would be cripplingly expensive?
