Shuttle Mobo Problem

Hi guys,

I've been given an XPC Shuttle with an Athlon CPU and an FN85 Motherboard.

The system seems to be rather poorly though and exhibits these symptoms:

* When switched on video output will often remain blank but then 'may' appear after about twenty minutes - whilst this is happening the DVD drive is happily whirring away no doubt running the Ubuntu Live disk

* If a the system is reset a few times it will boot cleanly but after an indeterminate amount of time it will simply freeze.

Here's what I've tried to remedy the situation:

* Different Memory
* Various OS installs
* Different Video Card

I've also monitored the core temperatures but these have never exceeded late thirties early forties.

If anyone has any thoughts I'd be most grateful :-)

Its most likely the power supply. I've had one of these shuttles and they suffer from power supply failures that means that the older they get the harder it is for them to ramp up the power to boot successfully, which starts to take, longer and longer.
The only solution is to replace the power supply, but it's not cheap. It may just be time to upgrade to a new machine.

I assume that your Shuttle is an SN81G4 series one as it has a socket 754 Athlon 64 processor!?

The power supply is the Shuttle PC35 which costs around £60 from ShoeBoxComputers:

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for the help - I've swapped the PSU with the one from my other Shuttle and, although it stayed on for a while longer it quickly resumed it's normal bahaviour.

Getting to the point where it'll simply go out of the window soon ;-)

Check the video output settings in the BIOS?
Might I also suggest swapping the BIOS battery, I've got a shuttle here that was being a PITA, changed the BIOS battery and all is well...

Thanks for that - I've already changed the CMOS battery and a Multimeter test told me the old battery was fine anyway.

I've checked the video settings and nothing looks out of the ordinary... really is a mystery :S
