    Overclocking?

I must say that I am a complete noob when it comes to this subject. This is my first attempt but I have a feeling it will be nowhere near my last lol

What is the safe temp for the CPU to be with a safe overclock?

I've put the multiplier down to 9.5 and the bus speed up to 225. This gives me an overall speed of 2140 (using the system listed on the left). I'm still playing around but I'm getting CPU temps of around 50 and core temps of 45. Is that normal?

I have only the fan that came with the CPU so have no extra cooling.

Just pushed the bus speed up to 235 and have got temps around 51 for the CPU and 46 for the core.

well if i was you, id get a thermalright heatsink, and see how high you can up the bus speed on stock voltages.

i got my opteron 165 to run at 285x9 at stock voltages. i had tccd ram so that ran fine.

if i was you, id do the following:

    1) set the ram to run at 166 or 133 (this way it wont be the thing thats holding you back)
    2) put all your fans on max - you are running quite hot at the moment!
    3) raise the fsb - you should manage at least 250, if not 275 - most amd chips clock quite well, unless you have been really unlucky.

once youve done that you have found the maximum for your chip.

then you can go and change the ram multiplier to bring the ram upto its max speed.

basically by doing this you overclock only the chip first (by having the ram on a lower multiplier, hence itll run lower than rated), and this allows you to find how high your chip goes without any extra volts.

then you can set the cpu multi to something low and up the ram, to find its maximum speeds (id set it to 3-3-3-8 just to be safe).

you may need to stick a little more volts through the northbridge, but usually thats it (unless you are going to go extreme, which i really wouldnt advise, especially with stock cooling!)

    hope this helps

(oh, when dfi-street existed they used to have a great ath64 overclock guide which i read and says what i just said but in more detail - try extremeoc to see if they have a similar guide!)

oh, and keep an eye on temps, and dont overvolt your chip if i was you!

    have fun!

    Cool, thanks for the advice

I've got some spending to do, come pay day

Where do I find the memory settings that you're saying to change?

I've found the DRAM Clock settings and have the options of DDR 200, 266, 333, 400, 433, 466 and 500. I assume these are what you mean but what would I change it to? My RAM is PC2100.

Get an AC64 cooler, and try lowering the ram speeds to give you more headroom.
Up the FSB by about 10mhz each time and see how far it will go.

I consider a good temperature to be below 35c on my system, but i know Core2Duo's are cold little chips.

Where are the RAM speeds? CPU-Z says that my FSBRAM is set at CPU/15, where can I change that? Nothing else changes the frequency of my memory.

yeah, those settings - you want to set it to 200mhz, and put everything back at stock.

then run cpu-z, and it should show ram speed 200 (this is 1/2 the bus speed, a good starting point).

then reboot and raise that fsb!

but seriously, checkout extremeOC - you will find more advice and settings that may work.

Go into your BIOS and look under RAM settings. Set them to your default timings (5-5-5-15?) and lower the RAM speed to the lowest possible that it gives you the option of. This will allow your CPU to be spead up without causing the RAM to fail on you.
