Thermalright Ultraright-120 Heatsink and Lian Li PC10A case

Can anyone please tell me if the Ultraright-120 Heatsink will fit in a Lian Li PC-A10 case? Also does anyone have any recommendations on which 120mm fan to use with it? I was looking at the Panflo FBA12G12H1BX (2500rpm, 103.8cfm,66.7Pa, 41.5dB(A)) Would this be suitable? I planned to use it with a fan controller.

Also can anyone tell me what the model no. of the four standard 120mm fans that the PC-A10 ships with? Also do you have the specifications?

    Many thanks!

Unless there's a forum member here who replies with the same case, hsf and motherboard then you'll have to just try and measure it youself. The 120 is 160.5 tall and I'm thinking of getting it but in my Lian Li PC6089B case it looks like it'll be a tight fit.

Also I read about there being an Ultra 120 + with 6 heatpipes on each side, reviewed at Anandtech but am not sure when it'll be released.

Are you concerned about the height of the cooler or its proximity to the A10's top fan?
If the latter, which motherboard are you intending to use? If the CPU is close to the top edge of the motherboard, the 120 will not fit unless, perhaps, you fit it sideways.

I have the LianLi case I would say no. The top blower fan encroachs upon the Asus Striker pwm heatsink, and looking at this pic
    http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...spx?i=2941&p=4
there will be the same issue. I'll have a closer look later and get back to you. I'll also have a look at the fans. I can tell you if your looking for a quiet PC the installed fans aint the quietest.

    What mobo do you have?

I have a MSI K8N SLi motherboard. I'm pretty sure that it will fit. If you look at this excellent review:

    http://www.ultimateoc.co.uk/index.ph...d=76&Itemid=32

they used the Akasa Evo Blue Heatsink which is similar to the Thermalright Ultra-120. Comparing the dimensions of the heatsinks:

    Thermalright Ultra-120: 13.2 cm (W) x 16.1 cm (H) x 6.4 cm (D)
    Akasa Evo Blue: 10.17 cm (W) x 9.36 cm (H) x 6.78 cm (D)

Now the Lian Li A10 case has a width of 21.5cm so that allows for 8.3cm for the height of the motherboard above its tray and the height of the CPU etc plus some clearance above the heatsink between the side panel.

Also I spoke to Thermalright technical support and gave them the dimensions of the case and they said it will be fine. They said as a rule of thumb if the case uses 120mm fans then it will be okay.

The only issue is with the rear fan duct because of the depth of the heatsink. The author of that review had the same problem and he moved the screws down into the grille and it was fine:

The Ultra-120 has a smaller depth than the Evo Blue (6.4cm vs 6.78cm) so it will be fine.

One thing I find strange about the PC-A10 case is the that the top fan is an intake fan. The review comments on this as well. Heat rises yet the fan will be forcing the airflow downwards. Also if you're using a heatsink like the Ultra-120 or the Evo Blue then the CPU fan will be blowing against the top intake fan. Unless I'm misunderstanding something the directions of the back and top fans need to be reversed so that the back is intake and the top is exhaust.

    Look forward to your comments.

    Many thanks!

I'd be really grateful for the model numbers of the 120mm fans. I think I'll change these. Also I'll change around the fans so that the top fan is exhaust and back is intake for the reasons stated in my post above.

I received an email from Bob in Thermalright Tech Support and he said its released in Mid-May. They are excellent with their response times for support. Response in less than 1 hour each time.

    Hi M8
Yep its weird the air flow but I can tell you it works.
I have and AC Pro 7 on mine and the cpu temp under coretemp runs at around 26 to 28 idle 36 on load depending on ambient temp. Load being gaming. Orthos at 4hrs was 46.deg.
If you go with the orientation as shown in the pic there wont be a problem, sorry I was being a little laess lateral thinking there and forgeot you can orientate it that way.
I'll measure up from the center of the cpu socket to the fan cage and get back to you plus the fan names. Need to shut down obviously

    Hi Drat,

Is your CPU fan on the side of the heatsink closest to the top intake fan? Because if it is then your CPU fan and intake fan are working against each other. You should try change the directions of the fans by turning them over. See how your system temperatures change. I'm sure this is the better setup. Unless I'm missing something here.

With regard to the distance to the CPU socket to the fan cage surely this is dependent on the motherboard? What is more important to know is the gap between the top edge of the motherboard and the top intake fan. I'm pretty sure that the Ultra 120 will fit in the PC-A10 with my K8N SLI.

By the way do you have the Lian Li TR-3A. I learnt today that they don't have manual fan controls but automatic control using temperature. I thought this was a bit crap.

Anyway look forward to hearing from you!

    Hi
If you have the orientation of the Thermalright sidways as shown in the above pic in the Lian Li, there is 9cm from the center of the cpu socket to the rear fan bracket.
The edge of the top blower fan overlaps my Asus P5B by 1mm.

Measuring from the center of the cpu socket to top fan cage edge measures 7.0cm, the width of the 120 is 13.5 cm so that equates to 6.25 cm from the middle of the heatsink to edge so you should have a clearance of .25mm.
Tight but appears on my mobo it would just fit.

Fans, well I checked and they are LianLi 2285BL, so they are rebadged oem.
TBH the noise is tolerable at medium setting on the control on the front panel.

Hope all of that helps, now toying with the idea of getting one to replace a crappy Zalman 8000 I had to get after I broke a lug on the AC Pro.
Fans I hope to replace with http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=532626
But thats an expense that will have to wait.

Nope didnt bother with the TR-3A.

The Zalman is a top blower as in the the Intel stock, the AC uses a right side fan postion (as you look in the case).
TBH as long as the temps are reasonable is mid thirties on load for gaming I dont worry.

Have a read through this thread HannsG shows a complete build on the LianLi with and Asus P5B and has a few decent pics which may help.

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=87014&page=5

Having read Hanns thread again he has measured a 5mm overhang on the P5B on the Asus board

Can you do me a really big favour can you please measure the gap (if there is one) between the 5.25" drive bays and the door? I want to know if there is enough room for the knobs to fit the Akasa Fan Controller. Actually I'm going to need two! I'd be very grateful.

The Lian Li one is rubbish I've decided. No manual control of fans - useless to me.

    Many thanks!

200mm as best I can measure.
There is a manual control on the front panel but I guess you want finer control for your akasa fans?

I think I might not have explained properly. I mean if you open the door the depth of the gap between the door and the 5.25" bays. I'm wondering if there is enough room to accomodate the knobs of the Akasa Fan Controller so that you are still able to close the door properly.

I won't be using Akasa fans I'll probably be using some Panflo ones with the FMG Micro Grommet sets designed for them which reduces the fan noise by up to 5dB(A). Such as the Panflo NMB-MAT RB-12025-L.

    http://www.dorothybradbury.co.uk/

    At 12V 64cfm 26dB(A)
    At 7V 38cfm <16dB(A) 935rpm

Bear in mind with the Akasa controller you can get down to 5V so it will be even quieter plus the FMG micro grommets even quieter still.

    Many thanks.

That is the gap measured from the 5.25 bays to the door the space is 2cm. That inc the space taken up by the 2mm thickness of the door.
