    Home Projects

Looking to build a home web development server/backup machine/central file store .... but haven't got a clue where to start. Hardware I'm just going to throw together whatever's cheapest (there'll never be more than two machines accessing it at any time, so I'm not that bothered about access times etc.), but I need some pointers on software. Ideally windows, as I want it to run SQL server, but any viable alternatives would be handy to know.

    TIA

Dave, cheers for the heads up on Server 03 trial, but I'm looking long term and once built, don't want to have to faff around six months down the line should I decide it's not cost effective to have MS on there.

Metier ... did you do everything off your own back, or did you have any online tutorials/advice links you might be able to share?

Off my own back, but i do have a MCSE book as well ...

web development server/backup machine/central file store

2003 will cover all that, although you would need to get the sql you need . Can use IIS for webpage, backup/file store can come under the same boat and can RAID up the HDs for redundancy.

What's a small business license for Server 03 going to cost? I get the feeling this simple premise might end up being very expensive...

    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...ProductID=4511

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=85623

The scan one is £245 for a small business edition, but... "PLEASE NOTE : To qualify for this licensing you need to purchase either a system, or a non-peripheral computer hardware component (which will be an integral part of the computer system which the OEM software will be installed) such as a motherboard, graphics card, hard disk, processor, keyboard, mouse. At the SAME time as the Operating System."

Might be an idea to find Moby-dick and ask him about prices, i think he would know better. Ive personnally never bought windows server 2003, got 2 keys from my universitys msdn and other was a 180day trail from an MCSE book.

You could get the 180 day trial and upgrade it? Although im not sure it was an upgrade option.
