Stooopid floppy drive question?

Have the connections ie the pins outs for floppy drives or even the cables changed recently?

I've not used or even connected a floppy drive in ages but recently needed to so that I could do a BIOS update but no matter what I did either the drive wasn't detected or when the cable is plugged in the wrong way the light would stay lit. Tried different drives, different cables but nothing would get the sucker working. Tried the drive in a different mobo and same results but in a third comp the drive works fine.

The boards the drive won't work in are an Asus P4P800E Dlx and a Gigabyte DS3P, tried the drive in a Fujitsu 915 mobo and the thing chugs along quite happily.

Any ideas or am I just getting too old for the comp scene

Checked the bios? Can't remember if anything in there that could switch it off/on.

First make sure the twist in the cable's between the connectors you're using for the motherboard and floppy drive, most cables have 3 connectors and on a number of occasions I've found the drive not working because I used the two that just had flat cable between them.

Then check your BIOS for an option about the A: or floppy drive and make sure it's enabled... if this doesn't work try resetting your CMOS.

Now that's something worth checking and is something I now remember after your reminder so thanks The cables I have are a rounded and a normal flat both with a single connector at either end but I can't remember if they has the twist at the floppy end.

make sure you connect pin1 of the cable to pin1 of the floppy drive.

This problem is normally fixed by removing one data connector and turning it over and re-connecting it -....

I've tried all that mate, as I said either the drives not detected or if I turn the cable over the light on the floppy drive stays lit permanantly, given up for the time being to be honest but will look into it further later in the week when I can be bothered

When the light is on perminently - this normally means one end of the cable is in wront way (pin 1 off the MB is not connected to pin 1 on the floppy).

If the light is off , when you insert floppy is will come on whilst it reads the info for the floppy. If the floppy is enabled in the BIOS - then possibly a duff cable/floppy?
