my old dell flat screen dead?

i've a 18 month 17" Dell flat monitor, which shows signs of ageing . Once in a while brightness increases and screen goes dark (blank).

To get it back to life I have to power recycle again. Any way to resolve this? or just throw away and buy a new one?

    Any help much appreciated

    thanks

1 or 3 year depending on what deal the seller has..

when you say the screen goes bright then totally dark, if you stick your nose up close can you still see the display showing ?

im thinking its the cathode inverter thats packing up, if you can still see the desktop showing very faint when its gone dark then it should just be a new inverter thats needed. a very easy repair if you can figure out how to get the covers off

basically pop the cover off the monitor to expose at least the screws around the screen. have a look round for the inverter.

it should look simular to the one on the ebay link im posting, http://cgi.ebay.com/CCFL-Inverter-fo...ayphotohosting

for gods sake dont go and buy that one as its bound to be wrong.
Get a part number from your faulty one and google it, see if you can find a bargain on fleabay.

of course if your good at the old soldering iron you may want to get the multimeter out and check if any diodes SMT fuses etc are blown, most cases you need to get another though.

Is it really worth trying to repair yourself when Dell can fix it under warranty? Or is the warranty only as long as the 'service package' you selected for the PC? Either way, I'd give Dell a call and see what they can do first.

Yeah, i think that would be the best idea.

But judging by a fellow friend of mine its taken over 2 weeks and counting for Dell to fix his XPS so if being without a monitor is an major issue and you are capable and conifdent of doing the repair yourself by all means do.

Don't they just drop off a new one and then arrange a time to collect faulty one?

in my experience, they don't bother to collect! i had a faulty printer a year ago, delivered a new one but not collected faulty one.

ok, i'll try to give a call to them regarding replacement but IIRC, monitors supplied along with system will be covered only for 1 year warranty

    Hi,

My name is Todd and I'm a customer advocate at Dell's corporate headquarters. I can't be 100% certain if this is correct for the UK but in the US monitors now carry the service contract of the system it is purchased with. If the monitor was purchased separately you can choose to upgrade to a longer coverage period than 1 year.

If you haven't contacted them yet I would recommend you contact Dell UK and find out for sure what coverage you have on the monitor. You may very well be able to get it replaced. If you have any additional questions you can contact us directly at Customer_Advocate(at)Dell.com and I'll try to get you some specific information. Please include my first name in the subject line of the email so it can be routed to me.

EDIT: Sorry, the boards won't allow me to create a direct email link.
    Thank you,

    Todd

    Customer Advocate
    Dell, Inc
