    Overclocking Prob

I recently tried to o/c my 2600+. at the mo i have the voltage set to 1.525 in BIOS which ends up with the mobo giving the processor 1.550 according to Easytune4 mobo monitor. I can increase the voltage up 2 a max of 1.575 (in BIOS) but anything above seems means that load temps go to 64/65C which causes a lot of instability in games etc. At the low voltages i have at the moment load temps are no more than 51/52C.

what do you recommend i do? any help would be great...

You can increase voltage to a MAX of 1.575? The standard AthlonXP voltage is 1.65 You should be able to go higher than that

exactly as soon as i hit 1.600 my cpu temps soar under load and it crashes a lot. my mobo lets me put the voltage up to a lot higher than i should need it but i cant actually get to the recommended anyway. hmm

What cooling are you using? CPU / Case? What about if you run without the case side on?

So what temps at that voltage with the side panel off? 1x 80mm fan front and rear really isnt enough for overclocking, have you checked the cooler is fitted correctly? What thermal compound are you using?

taking the side off makes little diff. 1/2C max. im using a generic compound (came with cooler), planning on gettin sum artic silver soon. would it make a huge diff tho? im also looking a installing a 120mm fan in the side panel. seems strange that i have to do these things just to run at the recommended voltage. grrr

Is the heatsink hot to the touch when at 60 degrees? if not then chances are its not making full contact

yeh its pretty hot, i was cleaning the pc out a few days ago and checked that it was fitted ok, it looked fine.

when i first built the comp. i kept getting random restarts which i could only fix by undervolting the cpu. in case u were wondering y it was so low.

Just seen some piccys of that cooler, you should prolly get better cooling if you plan to overclock more.

    first, you need better cooling.
if the fan is silent, stick a faster one on. if the cooler is made of ALU (shiny silver like colour) then bin it and get a new one. if its copper, then it should be fine with a decent fan if its fitted properly.
i recommend an slk800 or similar - has lots of surface area and is made compleatly of copper (v important).
if you use a clip-mounting heatsink, there is v good chance its not seated properly at all even if it looks right, esp if it only uses oneof the clipy things instead of 3 on each side of the socket.
using bolts thru the mobo (if your mobo has holes for them) is best as the springs will inc the pressure on the cpu a lot and give much nicer even contact. the thermal paste will be squashed thinly and there is less chance of damage to the socket or chip this way.

the hotter chips get the more voltage they need to be stable, this isnt noticable untill about 55c where the cpu needs lots more voltage, but that also makes it hotter and can never be stable at those speeds.
test with prime 95 to see if its stable, it should atleast do 30 imins with no errors for a pc to be properly usable

if you dont want to spend more money, under volt AND under clock the cpu. if the cpu isnt underclocked it wont be stable with less voltage.
have an exaust fan near the cpu area, also one in the side near cpu helps a lot. others wont make much differnce apart from to noise levels...

For a fan got for soemthing like a AKASA led fan with speed control, that way you can manulay adjust the speed of the fan so you get the best balance bettween noise and performance.

best 80mm fan ive used are the thermaltake smartfan - nice and easy to adjust.

led fans look rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishe and usually crap.
make sure you get fan with ball bearing - sleeve is niosyer.

pwm controlers make fans sound bad, its beter to use fans with built in control or to 5v or 7v mod them. controlers also look crap and there is no need t have it taking up a cd bay...
