Had to re-install Vista but my 2nd drive is not showing up at all! I went into Manage but the 2nd hard drive is showing as "Unallocated". I have important data on it. what can i do? Help!! Ta (It was used in Vista as a 2nd hard drive).

to me this would suggest a corrupt filesystem - time to dig out the recovery CD!
Put the HDD in another PC and try and get the data off it from there? By the way, were you playing Battlefield 2 last night? I'm sure I killed you lots in the J10!

If as I suspect the FS is b0rked this method won't work, but just about any bootable recovery CD or Linux distro should allow the data to be recovered.Quote:

I think i sorta had the same problem.
When i got my new motherboard and went to install XP on my Sata drive all my partions were gone and the entire drive was only showing one partion which was C: Unknown Partition... Anyway i used a few tools think it was something like Helans DOS Tools or something that i managed to fiddle with the partitions and made the one i wanted to install xp on as an Primary partition not logical partition. Dunno if this is the same case for you tho but you might wanna give it a shot.
Do you have a copy of Partition Magic, I had a similar problem to this a few years ago and it turned out that my orginal partitions were wrapped inside a new partition entry on the disk hence by the OS see the disc as being new and unallocated. Used PM to remove the outer partition and the 2 partitions magically appeared.
I'll be honest this was a few years ago and I can't quite remember the exact details but I did eventually get the partitions back in all their glory.

No it wasn't
Never mind, it is a lesson at a cost.
One more thing, NEVER format a drive on low "level format" unless you want to leave no trace of your data.
If you want to format the HDD do it as a quick format for two reasons:
1- low level format has tendecy to exhaust the head, so it is bad for the hardware.
2- Quick format allowes you to do a format quicker, and if you require the data back, the data should be recoverable.
