    Fan for NB

What's the largest fan I could get to attach to the NB for my DS3P mobo as the heatsink gets really toasty hot at the mo, measuring it it seems a 50mm fan would do but can't see any places selling this size. Wish I hadn't now chucked out some of the older P3 heatsinks I had as they had what looked like a 40mm fan on them which would have been ideal

I'm also worried about the northbridge on the DS3. But apparently these will run rock solid at high temps.

I can't find any fans at the moment, but I'm also concerned about noise, so have opted for a heatsink for the NB.

Zalman ZM-NB47J North Bridge chipset Heatsink.

Keep us updated if you do find a fitted fan.

I bought a couple of 40mm fans off ebay for about £4.50 inc. postage , one to stick on the northbridge hs, and one to put on the southbridge hs of my Asus P5B-E, because both of them did run very hot :\, since adding the fans significantly cooler

I've stil got a Riva TNT2 with a 40mm fan meant for a 486 bodged on to it. I'm entertained to hear the fan is worth more than the card these days!

Scythe Mini-Kaze 40mm is supposed to be very quiet. There's a few on Ebay at the moment.

How are you guys attaching the fans to the northbridge?

Measured the NB today, it's around 45mm square so a 40mm fan would have to do else a larger fan may obstruct the HSF on my mobo. I've been having a look at the Akasa 40mm x 20mm fan on Dabs, supposed to push 6CFM and be quiet (24dB) so might go for that.

    Motherboard risers,

I've got the bottom of the motherboard risers in the gaps, and then screwed the fan onto them,

I'll post a pic later, if I remember, I'm at work the now...

    [EDIT]
sry my camera isn't that great...

    from side

I know it's not straight but it'll do for now...

I decided to get an Akasa 40mm x 20mm blue fan in the end. Should go nicely with my blue cold cathode.

1 question for people, is this fan likely to cause a problem when I eventually decide to get a decent HSF like a Ninja or ThermalRight Ultra120? The current stock cooler is only a few mm away from the NB and I'm sure a 120mm wide cooler would foul on the NB coooler.

    No the AK-161 BL-S, the AK210 is a 40mm x 10mm with a naff looking heatsink, what I ordered is just a quiet 6cfm 40mm x 20mm fan.

Hey don't diss the AK210 - I just bought it off of Scan !

Admitedly I haven't installed it yet, and probably won't fit it now as I simply reinstalled the stock HS with some AS5. I might take the fan off of it tho and find some way of whacking it on the old NB HS.

i use an antec spot cool as its slightly larger has 3 speed settings and doesnt get in the way of anything as it is not directly on the northbridge but the airflow drops my northbridge temp by about 9 degrees so i am happy with it

What I would do is keep the stock NB cooler as that's bound to be bigger then the 1 that comes with the AK210, remove the fan and see if you can mount it on the stock NB cooler.

Any idea on how ? Might try and use the adhesive thermal tape, apply a little square to each corner of the fan and just stick it on.

According to my imagination the fan should fit straight on top of the NB heatsink with the screw holes lining up with the cut outs on the extreme edges, well I hope so anyway else it'll have to be sticky tape and elastics
