Thinking of getting a "My Book" 250 or 320
But i've always gone with Samsung drives before for reliability and quiet operation (i have no need for speed). How do WD HDDs compare against Samsung?
thanks

I've never had a problem with WD in my many years...not sure about externals though
I have the mybook 'premium' 320 as I wanted to connect it via firewire. It's quick and very quiet (it makes a lot less noise than my internal 320gb samsung). I can't comment on general reliability but mine's been ok so far (6 months).
Western Digital are proberly the best hard drives ive ever used, ive still got a WD 60GB IDE Drive with windows on it from like the day i put it on there god knows how long ago lol.
Highly Recommended!!!!!
yup i've got a 20gb one still going from donkeys years ago
They all hit a bad patch now and again. Check what you are going to buy and see if there are currently any problems with that model. I have the WD 320 my book runs fine
WD should be fine, I've never had any problems with them.
It says the weight of a mybook is 1.3Kg, are they serious? can someone actually check that on some kitchen scales or something?
the 500gb freecom drive is made of metal and weighs only 750g
surely the plastic would be lighter
I've got a 320gb Essential edition Mybook.
Had it for 2 months, thought it was amazing... because it was!
Yesterday it pops up in xp that the drive has gone offline, I find that a bit strange so turn it off to restart it.
The bloody thing wont turn on again! Going to have to RMA it. Found a few similar posts on tinternet.
I got mine from ebuyer, might have been a bad batch.
thats the thing with hard drives, a warranty is great, but i still couldnt deal with losing the data forever
I'm using a MyBook Essential Edition 250GB which has done well since last summer despite heavy, heavy, usage.
Looking at a Terabyte one next, tho it certainly won't be USB connected.
A friend I know bought an external USB Western Digital (laptop sized drive) and it died within about a month. Also my brother's WD IDE died literally the day after it's 3yr warranty expired. But as has been said - could have been a bad batch...
