ThermalTake Volcano12 is ment to be great ... got it cooling a 2000XP @ 2Ghz on low its 36C, also practically totally silent!
all of the slk series are excellent coolers, and the Socket A version of the latest Zalman is pretty damn good too.
As for fans...depends if you want performance or quietness...panaflo are damn good value for quietness, whereas you'd probably want something like a vantec tornado for ultra cfm.
Performance. I'm a great believer in putting up with the inconvenience of a few noisy fans, if it means not having to put up with the inconvenience of molten plastic. ;)
Looking at the ThermalRight SLK-947U. Looks the job.
I have a SLK947U on a Barton 2500+ running @ 2.31Ghz with a 92mm Vantec Tornado. Nice low temps - can highly recommend it.
Yeah, think that's what I'm going to go for. Read a few reviews, and it's all good.
Bit pricey though, but I suppose you get what you pay for.
for sheer value the volcano 12 is great, i got one cooling my 1800xp @ 2.1Ghz on lowest speed, cant hear it over psu fans, and its a tasty lump of copper too.
was really cheap when i bought it, and tho its not silent, it whacks a whole load of air if you need it to
oh yea, its got a PCI slot header too, with a potentiometer (sp?) on there. pretty good for tweaking around to find the perfect temp/volume ratio, esp when youre trying to find chip limits.
runs my athlon at 36deg (42 under load) at 1.65V
Exactly what I was gonna suggest :D may I suggest a Sunbeam Rheobus though to tame it when you want silence :)Quote:

By the way what machine is it going on??
The best? It's a toss up between Thermalright's SP97 and Swiftech's MCX478-V. Both run well with either a quiet or performance fan.
NF7-S, Sapphire Radeon 9800pro (Zelman Cooler + fan), Athlon 2600+, 1Gb Crucial DDR400, V770 Modding Case.Quote:

Best place to buy the SLK947U or SLK900U and a Vantec Tornado?
Erk. Got a vague recollection that a lot of the SLK series don't fit the nf7-s. Check thermalright's site.Quote:

the 947 fits the NFS- v2.0 OK ( this is what I had before my current board - AN7) - don't know about the 900 though. Would think it'd be OK too.
Pretty sure they have problems with the v1.1 but allfit the v2.0 NF7-S perfectly.
Anyone know differently?
The SLK947 is more expensive than the 900U, but apart from comaptability with a few more boards, is it actually any better a cooler?
Anypoint getting it if the 900U fits my board?
If you want the best and have the money SLK947 is the option but if want value and not a lot of diff `s in temp then get the ThermalTake Volcano12 i got one just be for xmas with a AMD 2400 Cpu and at full rpm 5500 i could get the 2400 to hit 2500 gig stable also at that rpm speed it was quieter than my slk800 with a Delta 80mm fan running at spec of 5700 rpm. and to top it off you can also change the speed of the Fan to, so you can have the best of both worlds. DABs Direct or Cpu city £16.00 + P/P
