    5.1 vs 7.1...?

    hello,

Which configuration do you think I should go for and why? I am currently thinking about these two sets:

    5.1- http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=315677

    7.1- http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=90373

    Thanks!!

    P.S: why can't I find any 6.1 sets??

    Because it doesn't exist?

I'd personally go 5.1, I can't really see that 7.1 gives massive benefits, but I'm sure others will argue otherwise.

7.1 is only worth it if you have a very large room - especially if its rectangular in shape, with the system set up with the side speakers on the long side of the rectangle.

For smaller rooms or more square room, 5.1 will be fine.

The extra sixth or seventh speaker/s behind you sound great but only if used with the right equipment. The money spent on a 7.1 system is wasted if you cannot output the sound properly. Go here it wll explain it way better than I can.

If you're considering either, i take it you can afford either. The only thing that would stop me would be value for money, which the 5.1 wins at, but if you can afford 7.1 go for it, i would...

I used to have the 7.1 Gigaworks, i didnt bother using the middle speakers in the end (you do not have to configure it as 7.1), i found they were awkward to place. As girdag said they are most effective if you have a room thats much longer than it is wide.

For the price i found the gigaworks to be quite good sound quality wise and the subwoofer has some serious kick behind it. Becareful with volume (dont turn everything to max and assume all will be well) - a friend of mine has broken 2 sets of gigaworks due to volume abuse.

Downside - the bass overpowers the treble.
