2 gig or not 2 gig

    Hey peeps,

My current rig is an asus a8n sli deluxe, amd x2 4200 chip and an x1900xtx graphics card.

Currently I have a gig of corsair xms 3200 ram which As far as I can tell is the current bottle neck. Now I`m gonna be doing a big upgrade towards the end of the year but need something to tide me over.

I am thinking of getting another gig but Was wondering wether getting a gig of cheap ram will be ok or if this was could system problems?

if you get another gig of the same type of memory (ie corsair xms 3200) make sure you put it in the slot which is the same colour as the one you currently have the exsiting chip in then it should run in dual channel mode. If you get a different kind of memory then it should still work but just not in dual channel mode

Long as you go with something like Corsair VS you *should* be okay... but if you have tight memory timings set you'll have to loosen them up... and if you've overclocked it could cause trouble.

EDIT: Do you have one 1GB stick or 2 x 512MB at the minute?

Definately upgrade to 2Gb, that in my mind has been a minimum for game play for at least a year now.

Try and avoid having anything other than 2x1Gb sticks in there though.

also keep in mind, 2T = negligible difference..

still, its important to keep in mind of that, just in case you've forced it to do 1T before, and your system might not boot because of that..

I had a pair of 512MB stick in my machine, and added another pair of 256MB sticks (better than having them sat on the shelf!) to get me up to 1.5GB.

I did feel the improvement in Windows, specially in alt-tabbing and game loading speeds. Didn't notice a thing in Linux, but then my work was quite fast enough there already.

That is S939 with single core CPU. Oh, and I run my memory timings on "auto" in the bios so they are pretty lazy compared to what an "real" overclocker would no doubt manage. I only bother overclocking the CPU these days.

SHould have menetioned that Its 2 sticks of 512.

    board is socket 939.

I will be upgrading later this year but I have been looking and reckon I could get another gig for about 60 quid.

I will have a look for the corsair xms stuff and see if there is any going anywhere

For most things you will notice the difference between 1 and 2 Gig more then the difference between single and dual channel.....so don't be afraid of adding a 1GB stick (if your motherboard lets you!) if that's a lot cheaper.

I would expect, picking up a pair of 512MB DIMMs from the classifieds would probably be the cheapest and best performing course of action though.

Im having a bit of trouble finding any corsair xms 3200 ram.

I can find loads of generic ram.

Would buying generic stuff work fine or am i lickely to see a performance hit.

I find memory speed really isn't that important, unless your application is pi calculations.

Quality is though, I tend to buy Corsair or Geil as I have wasted the money I would have saved on cheaper stuff on sending it back.
