Asus P5W DH RAM question ?

I have an ASUS P5W DH deluxe mobo and i am currently running generic pc6400 memory, i've started to dabble in overclocking (my E6600 is running at 3ghz without sweating !!) and i'm now thinking of watercooling and pushing things further !! I want to upgrade my ram, i've read on some sites that theres not a huge difference going past mem speeds of 800mhz with the conroes - is this right ? Also, anyone out there recommend some overclocking ram for this board (and which with experience to avoid !!) ?

Have you lowered your current RAM's speed? That will allow some extra push without actually overclocking the RAM.

OCZ are a great make, they have good customer service aswell, apparently, and the warranty for overclocking is outstanding.

Pretty much a novice with overclocking really, just pushed up the fsb so far and the rest is there to learn !! Just thinking about getting the equipment right really then learning a bit more !!?

Well if you have matched RAM you should be alright.

Lower your RAM speeds to 533mhz, this will mean when you crank up the FSB it won't have such a high effect on your RAM. This usually allows you to get that extra bit out of your CPU if you have cheaper RAM.

But as i said, OCZ are good. How about OCZ Platinum Revisions?

Thanks for the advice, is this what they mean by setting up a divider (i've seen reference to it, slowing the memory compared to the mobo yes ?) ? I've been looking at OCZ ram and it looks reasonably priced too !!

Firstly, not sure why you need new RAM.....PC6400 will allow you to push an E6600 to 3.6GHz while still being within spec.

Most E6600s will not reach this speed, those that do will not do much more.......So, is the price of the RAM worth it?

As for the asynchronous memory speed, the P5W DH has a number of BIOSes which do not like you running the RAM slower then the CPU FSB, the board just fails to post.

As with all things overclocking: Nothing is guaranteed and what works for one may not work for anohter....So YMMV

Thanks again Shaithis, i'm pretty new to overclocking so thanks again for the advice, sounds like i might be lucky with my chip then ? I've had no issues whatsoever with it but it did have a bios flash when it was new 3/4 months back so it may have helped. I'll sit and have a play later (confidence required he he) and see what gives !!!

Not sure if you have stumbled over xtremesystems.org but there is a HUGE thread there regarding the P5W DH Deluxe....175 pages of info......its well worth a read if you are tweeking the board.

The most useful post to you from it is probably this one which shows a good set of BIOS options for the kind of overclock you are looking for.

    Cool stuff.
By the way, PC format had a good guide on Overclocking last month i think, see if you can find it on the website or something.
