i didnt really mean the PR ratings, more the steppings on the CPU and the differant cores you get, A, B. Barton etc etc etc

http://overclockers.com/tips00316/ is a link i just found. Showing what the actual stepping on the core means.

There are 4 types of AMD Athlon XP processers:

    1. Palomino - cant really get these any more, they us 0.15 technology, and have a default voltage of 1.75v ish. This means they run hot, there is pratically no room for overclocking, heat and voltage stop you. They were made from xp1500 - xp2200 (i *think*)

    2. Thoroughbred - this comes in two flavours A and B. B tends to be a better at clocking that A, as it runs cooler. Both Thoroughbreds come in 0.13 technology. xp1700 is the lowest and xp2400. The xp2400 is hotter than other tbreds.

    3. Barton - the latest XP chip from AMD. Dont know too much about this as i dont have one. But ranges from xp2500 - xp3200. The xp2500 tends to be a good clockers. The Barton range has started to be multipler locked (like P4's) as i think AMD were annoyed with people buying xp2500 and clocking them to xp3200+.

Hope that helps, not sure how accurate all of it is.

Don't forget Applebreds - which are officially Durons, but are really Athlon XP (T'bred B's) with half the cache disabled.

    XP T'breds have 256k l2 cache
    Bartons have 512k l2 cache

Bartons after week 39 are now locked, and currently not unlockable.

    Wasn't the palomino .18 micron?

edit: just came across this again - might be helpful

Yes , the palamino cores WERE .18micron , as i have one, well actually 2 and they dont overclock worth rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish, specially since you cant change the multiplyer*Shakes fist at AMD*.

Actually you could have changed the multipliers. You'd just have to connect the L1 bridges and you have an unlocked CPU. Otherwise, doing a pin mod, you can select which multiplier you would want to run your CPU.

As for their overclockability, like most of AMDs' CPUs, steppings were a good indication of how good a certain CPU could overclock, and also a bit of luck. If I could get a +25% overclock, I'd think I've done well. With the Palominoes that I've had, they had overclocks of 22-27%.
