Something noticeable about Maxtor Drives

They defrag very fast!

I have 4 PC's here

1 has a SATA Raptor 74gig and a SATA Seagate Barracuda 80gig
1 has a Maxtor EIDE 120 gig
1 has a Maxtor EDIE 60 gig
1 has a SATA 160gig Barracuda

Both the Maxtors, one of which get used heavily for photo's and film and editing and stuff on an old P4 2.0, and the other is in an nForce2 gaming SFF..... both defrag MUCH faster than my other drives.

Whats THAT all about?

Not sure if IDE has anything to do with it, both those drives are IDE compared to the other two SATA's. I have a maxtor and i haven't noticed it was particularily fast. It's a SATA one.

I'm pretty sure it's that drive in my machine that goes ker..clonk every half an hour

Absolutely. My Diamondmax 10 is in it's 3rd computer and still going strong

I like maxtor drives, especially the Maxline ones. Always found them to be mighty reliable.

or he's just totally misread howards message.. i have to say im a fan, never had one die on me and iv been using them for a good long while now

actually looking for another 16MB 250GB SATA from them to get some RAID action going, but ebuyer dont have them anymore and scan are playing "call for price" which i cant be bothered with.

(last drive to die on me was a 4GB Quantum Fireball, which had been abused for far longer than i would have expected it too (idiots knocking over cases and the like at work)so i guess iv been pretty lucky with regards to the way some people seem to have one die a week )

I've always had pretty good luck with Maxtor drives; 30GB IDE, 80GB SATA, 2x40GB IDE and 2x250GB SATA all trundling nicely, fingers crossed. That said, now they've been taken over and are essentially Seagate's budget range (shorter warranties for a start) I'm a little leery. Especially since the last time I bought Seagate, 2 out of 4 crapped out on me.

4th one has died in 3 months, while the IBM deathstars from the year dot are still going strong.

Must admit I have yet to have a hard disk die on me that I hadn't abused/overheated/done something stupid to. Look after them, they'll look after your data

...and no Clunk, that does not mean gentle persuasion with a sledgehammer...

Thats the thing though, I'm always really careful with hard drives, and I always have a fan of some kind.

But I do agree that they are fast, and the 250gb one that they sent me as an RMA replacement was almost silent, and much faster...now its completely silent though

I've had HDs from just about everyone over the years, and I've had a few failures, and I reckon it's largely the luck of the draw.

The Deskstars were my favourite HDs ever, because they were fast, quiet, and ran cool, as well as being ultra reliable. Then IBM sold off their HDs to Hitachi, and they became dogs for a while.

The one disk I had more than one failure with was the original Seagate Barracuda, which was one of the first 7200rpm drives. It was fast, but ran very hot. Mind you, back then Seagate's warranty meant that I got it replaced twice FOC, the second one when it was almost 5 years into the warranty.
