ADSL+" Wireless router's

Hello,
I have ntl cable broadband, and at the moment it goes through the cable modem, and then into a wired belkin router which send it out to all the pc's. Basically I want to get a wireless router to replace this, and was hoping to get the netgear DG834G, which i thought would work fine. However, i did some googling on it which seems to suggests it wont work because i have cable bb not adsl. Is this true that it won't work?

no it wont. you NEED the modem that your provider gave you, along with a "cable/broadband router" of some sort. like the ones here:

or to simplify in case your used to DSL connections:
if you think of where you plug your network cable into the cable modem as where you plug a DSL modemrouter into the phone socket your not far wrong

No reason you shouldn't be able to use the Netgear as a wireless access point I wouldn't have thought...

That Netgear can't be used as just an Access Point, it has to be used in conjunction with the ADSL modem.

There is little point in buying a device with a modem built in anyway as you won't be using it.

Anything off that link that Madduck posted should do you. £30 is pretty good for a router, Wireless AP and switch.

The RJ-45 sockets on ADSL routers are configured to switch packets only, the routing is performed between these and the ADSL controller (and WLAN for those that have it), but don't provide routing between LAN ports, nor do the LAN ports have any dhcp client functionality, so you can't hook it up to your NTL modem.

If you need Wireless, and some extra features,
go for a Linksys WRT54G/GS.

They have a Linux OS, and the Firmware can be replaced, which makes this a well featured Wireless Router.

Finally opted for the linksys 'broadband router' WRT54GL? well the one with gpl freeware, so i can run the open source stuff. It needs to be able to go through about 4 walls so fingers crossed It arrived today, but i cant test it straight away because i need some darn Sata cables think i've been using eSata, although there's no indication to say which cables are is which so its just an assumption, but it's causing access to the drive to be rather unstable.
Back OT, the router says run install cd before doing anything else, which I probably will, but is this essential?

no, you just hook it up with an ethernet connection, and then youj can configure it. there is no need to install any kind of software.
look in the manual, there should be a fast guide, 10 steps or something,. there you can also see who to do this with an ethernet connection, like default ip,....
