    Odd Hard Drive Problem.

I have a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 250GB drive that I use for storage and recently, when XP is about to load up, CHKDISK pops up and says that there may be errors and that the drive needs to be scanned, it then scans the drive, does something and loads windows.

There are no SMART errors, it works perfectly and it isnt making any unusual noises.

It started doing this on a previous install of XP sp2, and is now doing it again on a fresh install after being disconnected for a couple of weeks.

Any ideas what could cause this? It's a new one on me.

    Thanks

How old is it? Have you got something like Spinrite 6 you could run on it?

Its about 3 months old, its an RMA replacement.

Which flex are you on about? The one that was in my profile? I strongly suspect that the commando killed it, wasnt overvolted and it was actively cooled, shame that because it did really tight timings.

I havent run powermax, I'll grab that tomorrow. I was more keen to find out why chkdisk is singling out this particular disk, when it appears to be working fine.

no problem, after powermax shows all clear
    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control \Session Manager\BootExecute

Make sure that it's not set to autocheck

Might be worth a punt to check
Event View/Application/WinLogon after it has done run chkdsk

Right click drive, tools tab, run a error check. Tick auto repair, then ok it.
It will probably say it needs exclusive disk access, to reboot...blah...blah...do so.

If this doesnt work, boot off the windows disk into the recovery console. Then run it in there.

This is a common 'issue' ive come across many times. For some reason windows gets stuck in a loop with chkdisk at boot. One of the above 2 have always fixed it for me

Is it something that has been physically written onto the disc to tell windows to check it every time though?

Ill give that a try his aft, cheers
