64-Bit Vista, how is it obtained?

    hello,

I was looking for a retail version of Vista 64, when I came across this on Scan:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=527309

"Please note 64-Bit Edition DVD is not included in this package. Only the 32-Bit edition DVD is supplied in the box. Information on obtaining 64-Bit edition is included in this package."

What does this mean? Any details? Will I have to pay anything extra, and if so, how much?

    Thanks in advance!

You'll have to pay Microsoft a charge to have them ship you a 64-bit install disc. I can't remember what they charged me, but I think it's about £7.50 or thereabouts.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

    hello,

    Thanks for your reply.

Can you do this at any time, or does it have to be before a certain date?

In addition, did they continue the full support/warranty with the 64 bit upgrade?

    Thanks!

Not sure if there is a time limit, but I don't think so. It takes you to a website where you have to enter your 32-bit key to validate you own a copy. You then give your credit card details and they ship you a 64-bit disc. Mine hasn't yet shown up, but it does take a few weeks.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

I have been using Vista Ultimate for about 3 weeks now. I have had very few problems with it, all of my hardware worked instantly and it is very well presented and slick.

There are some nice touches if you are into the eye candy, download the Dreamscape add on and some extra gadgets.

The only thing that that bugs me about it is all of the extra security features they have installed. I have now disabled User Account Control as this was really annoying and even though I was the only use and administrator, it stopped me from doing certain things like copying, moving or deleting system files. It even blocked me using Nvidia Control Panel for some reason. however, I can see how these features could be useful if you had multiple people (and kids) using the smae pc. Personally I don't so it is just annoying.

Whether or not it justifies the price tag is questionable...Ultimate edition is the way to go but at the moment I can't really see that much advantage over Xp except for some window dressing and a few extra features.

It is undoubtedly the future though so its more a question or when rather than why.

Its pretty damn good. It's worth having XP on a different hard drive just incase though.

    Question

Is the upgrade to the 64-bit version only available to those who purchase the 32-bit retail version of Vista Home Premium as per link in original post at top of thread or can those who purchased say a new Dell machine which came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium also qualify?

I remember hearing a year or so ago when new 64-bit CPU's from AMD etc came onto the market that the general view was that you wouldn't see the full capabilities of these CPU's until a 64-bit version of Windows became available. Is this true and does it therefore mean upgrading to a 64-bit version of Vista will provide better performance/extra features?

    Thanks.
