    Motherboards - Which one???

I am looking to upgrade my cpu and mobo, although I play the odd game I don't need an SLI setup.
I want the best overall performance. I use the PC for a whole load of stuff from editing and encoding home movies, editing photos, streaming to my xbox 360 etc...

I am looking at the - Asus P5B Premium Vista Edition iP965

Will probably overclock a little but nothing too extreme.

    Thoughts on this board pls.

I'd only pay extra for the Vista Edition boards if there's a function that it provides that you'll need and use.

My current board has been fantastic with no problems but I hear recently there have been a few quality control issues?

What alternative boards would be a good buy?

I would suggest the Asus P5B, Abit AB9 and the Gigabyte DS3!

Didn't mention earlier but I would go for the DS3P on that side of things because its an outstanding board and some of the problems with the DS3 have been ironed out.

I actually just bought a P5B Delux Wi-Fi. I didn't need the Wi-Fi but WTF, it was effectively free.

My only problem was something I didn't really think about before I bought it, which is that virtually none of my components are compatible with it.

So Jayos, if you are thinking about it seriously you might want to review the spec at event.asus.com/2006/mb/P5B/models.html (Sorry, I am not yet allowed to post URLs. You'll have to copy/paste it if you want to look.)

I don't know if anyone can think of a way to retain my perfectly adequate IDE DVD-RW when the mofoboard has only SATA slots free?

Are you sure you haven't goosed the board by plugging the floppy drive into the IDE connector?

These newer Intel-based boards normally have the JMicron (sp?) IDE controller which needs drivers that aren't supplied with Windows.

Probably best to buy an IDE->SATA converter for a few quid or replace the drive with a SATA model, they are that cheap now.

Yes, but I'm using that for my two HDDs. I used to have a CD burner, DVD burner and two 200 GB hard drives. Now I just have the drives. I have a USB DVD reader so I get by, and I can burn using one of my laptops, but it wrinkles my butt to have a pretty good DVD burner just sitting on the floor.

Thanks shiathis, I'll probably do that. I should have bought the stuff over the Net, but my old mb blew a screw and I was stuck with no mouse and 480x640 in 16 colours so I went to a Belgian PC shop where they spoke little English. Since my French is good enough only to buy beer I ended up pointing and buying without taking advice.

Actually IAmATeaf, I did bother to connect the floppy (properly), and only then think about when I last used it. 1967 I think. I think I'll whip it out and stick in a couple of rows of USB ports.

Will check spec. but I only have DVD drive and DVD writer so should be ok.
