POLL: Your "Order of Distrust" in Hard Drives

    Hi guys.

I've decided that a REAL POLL (instead of me messing it all uplast time) would be a good idea.

BUT....and like Queen said "Fat Bottom Girls, they make the Rocking World go round"....so it's a BIG BUT.....

I wanna know your DISTRUSTED brands.

That means, in this poll, the higher scrorer is the one that has "let most people down" to coin a phrase.

    Ready?

Seagate; the last four I had had a 50% fail rate. After that, WD.

    Maxtor

Every drive I have had has been noisey and failed

    Like in order

    Samsung/Seagate
    WD
    IBM/Hitachi

Samsung and Seagate both equally good drives but quite opposite

eg Samsung Quiet and Seagate quite loud

Fujitsu had a bad time a while ago - millions of their MP range of desktop HDDs failed, however IMHO their 2.5" drives are fine. We've fitted loads in several notebooks and not had any back.

I voted Maxtor. Out of all the HDDs we've ever used, Maxtor's range appears to have been consistently bad. I'm not counting Fujitsu's MP range or IBM's "Deathstar" drives because that was really just an issue with one range, rather than them being consistently bad.

I also didn't know that Excelstor and Hitachi were the same company...

If there is one thing I have learnt about hard drives in the last 15 years is that personal experience is "luck of the draw" 99% of the time and also that mechanical devices are a lot more prone to fail.

I've voted Maxtor becuase I bought one second hand recently and it had to be RMA'd. Also a number of people have posted (in other threads) they've had problems with Maxtors.

The older Maxtor drives from a few years back are still going strong though (thank God).

Whilst it is true that I have heard of failures from all brands and have had most fail on me personally at least once, Seagate are my clear failure winner.

Mind you, it is only Quantum where I have actually had the head fall off

As far as I'm aware Excelstor simply "remake" old hard drives. They don't make them for Hitachi? (I could be wrong though)

edit - looks like I am wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExcelStor_Technology

Excelstor make drives up to 160gb - and according to Wikipedia - they make these budget drives for hitachi as well.

Got 100% of my last 2 Seagates, but it had to Maxtor after their absolutely horrific reliability record of the early naughties with the budgetty drives.

Excelstor have to be my least favourite. Absolutely dreadful. Always seem to fail when just outside the warranty period.

Mainly buy Western Digital these days because firstly, I've never had any trouble with them, but mainly because they come factory sealed, so I know that Scan haven't sent me a drive that has been either RMA'd by someone, that they can't be arsed sending back to the manufacturer, or used in one of their company machines then re-sold.
