Bear in mind that this thread is a guide for ASUS P5K series MOBO's...so, we wont know what MOBO your DELL will use, or how good it is at overclocking.

Changing settings is quick enough, but you will have to spend time running tests like ORTHOS, to make sure that the settings are stable...normally done overnight.

Then it is just fine tuning it down to what you want.

Oh right. Thnaks for this and to clunk too. I'll come back when I've got the machine and see if it's worth giving a go.

I set the ram voltage to 1.9 as well

Yeah, its ok, the P5K wont let you set 266/533, so just set it to 300/600 instead and start from there

I can only have 300/667 how do i change to 600? in my screenshot above i only have 4 choices .

Try putting it to 266 for the FSB and auto for the memory frequency..that should do it

I'm running more than that now, i have a e6600, and 266 would be stock speeds, or am i getting mixed up
i thought i could get up to about 330 on the fsb.

I was meaning to do that to see if it worked at 266/533 which is 1:1.

You can set it to 330/660 if you want.

If there is no divider, just use auto.

Still no go, highest i can get the fsb is 285 and memory 427, and thats on auto.

Guess i shouls have bought a better mobo like the deluxe.

What made you go for the VM model anyway?

Just wondering why I am having so much trouble with my e6420 chip (Check my system)

I followed this guide albeit for a ds3 board, but I would have thought 3ghz would be easily done.
However I need 1.475v (bios) to get it 4hours stable (running now).
(Temps are quite good infact idle-30/orthos load-52 TAT)

To get it running at 3.1ghz I need to feed it more than 1.54volts to get it 3hours stable (I stopped it).
PC will not even post with anything less than 1.5volts!

I tried to run 3.2ghz with 1.6 bios volts but will not even post.
What puzzles me is the low temps for the high volts! Would it be safe to run 1.6+volts 24/7 with load temps under 60?

I thought the only reason we don't put excessive volts to chips because they heat too much, but if they don't heat as much (60c) then we can safely use 1.6 or 1.5v

I wanted to run everything @ 400fsb & 800fsb for the ram.

Shall I just leave it @ 3ghz with 1.475volts?

Am I doing something severely wrong?

Sounds like you have the RAM set to 800Mhz before you started overclocking.

Post your bios settings please.

Ram @ 1:1 running @ 752 relaxed manual timings of 5,5,5,18 @ 2.1volts
Subtimings left at auto (Not sure if this would count for much)
I'm guessing it can't be the RAM as it's relaxed as hell with plenty of volts (enough for tight timings).

All spread spectrums are disabled.
Disabled LAN/OnBSound/Legacy USB storage,
PCIe@100mhz
PCIe/Northbridge/FSB Voltages are default.

Do you think it could be a bad bios? (I didn't really try using the old bios, maybe I should have oc'd on the initial bios.)
Could older bios' overclock better than the newer ones? Or is that just silly?

I dont have a DS3, so I couldnt say which bios is better, but on some of the Asus bios's, some of the older ones work better than the new betas, I'm still using an old one on mine, just because it works well.

I think it could be time to memtest the RAM, do each stick on its own, memtest 5 for at least an hour, and do all the sticks in all the slots, and if there isnt any errors, at least you can rule that out.
