erm, i doubt any would need to use a page file, theyd all fit in 512 with windows xp id guess?
512k.. most games. 512mb, not that many... battlefield 1942 will load faster (and run smoother) with more ram, but not sure about other games.. 512mb is alright for me :)
mark
Its like Graphics Cards with 256megs of RAM onboard. Cost a lot more, do nowt in games.
128meg versions get exactly the same FPS in most cases, because the games themselves don't need or want to use more than 128megs of RAM, so there is no increase in performance if the RAM is avalible or not.
Same with tons of system RAM. If the games don't need it, they wont use it, and the performance gains will be small, if anything.
Try LOMAC with 512, then 1Gb. Huge difference.
planetside try playing that with 512 PMSL
nice avatar thing Planetside :o
some of the newer games are starting to want more than 512mb, but not 1024 yet
thanks
How about for Apps?
I was betting that if I stuck 1GB of ram in my next system that Dreamweaver, ColdFusionMX, MS Access and my other apps would fly along a lot more happier at the same time! :)
Certainly there was a huge jump when i had a 256mb and 512mb system *the 512 system then was given to my family :(* while the 256mb notebook followed me to Korea.
At this time i was thinking the 1gb ram was needed if I was going to be running a few programs at the same time and not get a HD disk chug, but i`m so used to my *Chug, Chug* Notebook Hard disk...
I think a 5200rpm HD and 512ram would seem like lite speed compared to this old girl, but I want more!
P3M-1GHZ, 256 ram, 16mb Raedon (screams in pain)
its more imprtant to have fast ram at the moment, than lots of ram (if you have 512mb system ram, and 128mb gfx ram), unless you are doing heavy photo/video/3D manipulation, or you are running a server.
512 @ PC3700 > 1024 @ PC2800 IMHO
I'm sure MSFS2004 must take a lot of ram.It takes an age to load with 512 mb of PC3200
I found as streetster has said that Battlefield 1942 runs smoother with 1 gig of ram also GTA 3, and vice city run much better with that much to.
At the moment if i could go back i'd just have bought 512 but the fastest available at the time.
Vice City runs better with a gig of RAM? It not exactly a brand new game, wouldn't of thought it needed anything like 512mb to run, to be honest.
I'll have a look at it...
IL-2 Forgotten Battles.
1 gig is the way to go...no doubt.
Havent found a great deal of improvement using 1gb myself.
Battlefield 1942 didnt chew the hard drive as much. Best bet is run stuff and see what the memory usage spikes at (XP and 2k)
i found the max i even hit was 832mb roughly
Unreal Tournament 2003 seems to be happier with a gig too. Champ Manager 4 loads a lil quicker too. I dont think its nessacery to have 1Gb yet but its definitely getting that way.
I haven't felt much of a difference with 1024MB in my main system now, but I am sure there's no harm in having it! :D
I'm a great believer in a high fsb, I would tend to go for a faster stick than one with a greater capacity.
Saying that, I would have 1gig in a second. Of course, I would waste ridiculous amounts of my hard earned cash on corsair :p
Planetside is the only game i have bought that runs terribly on 512, reasonably on 768, but only runs properly on 1024MB of ram.
Tab out mid game and goto task manager, and the game never uses less than 500mb of memory.
It is a bloated game mind, needs a fast CPU and good GFX card and broadband too else its useless.
Ive got broadband and upgraded my PC just to keep playing it :D
Butuz
Not sure what you mean. If the game never uses more than 500mb of memory, then why would it run better with a gig of RAM over 512mb?
I have found that alot of new games will happily use up to 700megs of RAM, even the RTS 'Empires dawn of the modern world' uses about 650 on my comp.
Most Operating systems use a good 100mb to run, if not more, not to mention all the other stuff people tend to run in the background, IRC,MSN,Teamspeak and whatever else, it all uses ram, and if it never goes UNDER 500mb, chances are it goes over 600mb + Op. system is a good 700-750mb etc etc :)Quote:

all adds up
Yup Yup and Vaul if you read what i wrote youll see i said never uses LESS than 512MB of memory not the opposite :)Quote:

Ah yes, so it does. Appologies.
I used to think I was Ok on 512mb of Crucial DDR400, looks like I'll get another stick of it now! ;)
IL2 deffo feels better with more RAM - and because I'm running a gig, the RAM seems to take up some of the slack in the gfx and cpu dept so I can have my eye candy :D which is nice
I like to play 2 games at a time, dual moniters. with my 2 mouses on one computer, I'm ambidextrious and split brained. ANd 1Gb of ram helps there. :)
