160GB Western Digital Caviar SATA II 300 - noisey??

Having decided to go with a Gigabyte GA 965P-DS3P board I'm now looking at a 160GB Western Digital Caviar SATA II 300, I've read a few reviews and they seem ok apart from a few people have complained they are noisey??

Any one got one? I'd like to know how 'noisey' they really are...

Iv got a 250gig one and again very quiet, especially next to my maxtor. Im sure maxtor make thier parts out of stone

I Have one 250Gb and one 400Gb both near silent. Western Digital drives are the best imo.

My dads got my old IDE seagates and they are still going strong though!

Of course the raptor's noisy its spinning at 10,000 rpm! Generally speaking the 'standard' wd drives are very quiet in my experience. Both maxtor drives ive gone through have been noisy and unreliable.

yea mine gets dangerously hot too. Without a fan blowing on it it gets above 50c

My Maxtor is silent. It did die though but I resurrected it. Is that bad?

I did see on one site that the WD drive you're asking about was a pretty awesome performer as long as it's the AAJS version you're getting, don't know about noise though. I imagine it all depends on the specific model rather than a manufacturer.

I've had noisey drives in the past, they were perfectly fine, just noisey. Don't know what actually makes the noise, but it can't be good - noise = viberations + spining disks - surely don't go togeather??

Vibrations can be killer when it comes to hdd as they can alter the polarity of the sector making data unreadable. Noise at this kind of level doesnt create enough vibration to do that though
