How much power will I need for a Gigabyte GA 965P-DS3P running a C2D e6600?? Bearing in mind I'll only have one card, one HDD and one Optical, and will not be OC'ing?
500w PSU?

depends what card you're talking about..but 500w will do it.
Decent 500w PSU will be fine - Corsair HX520 or Seasonic S12-500w would be my suggestions :)
500w will easily be enough.
Check out my system, mildly overclocked to 2.5ghz with 2 hard drives and 2 optical drives and with the much thirstier Nforce 650i chipset.
Works perfectly on a 420w PSU, with perfectly strong rails and the fan never rises above tick over.
I was thinking on the cheaper side of things

will be the best PSU I've ever had!
NorthQ NQ-4800-400
Doesn't do to well in the above review , key point perhaps. If you look on page 1 you'll also see it has the weakest 12v rails, 12v provides the cpu & mobo.Quote:
With the NorthQ dead
The hiper, tagan or 500W FSP Sparkle Blue Storm are all better than either of your last 2 choices. What gfx card are u using??
Go for the corsair X 520w, its sooo worth it in the end, whats an extra £30 anyway?
Ill be on my 5th galaxy in 4 weeks in a few days. So far, Ive had 1 that was working fine, but then had the incompatibility issue with the Asus commando, replacement was DOA, the second replacement also had the incompatibility issue, and the next one worked fine, but they offered to send me a DXX, which they did, and that has the incompatibility issue with 680i boards  Probably says a lot about Asus boards as well, but the fact is, the 680i works fine with a cheapo seasonic 380w psu, but unfortunately, that hasnt got 2x pcie. Im going to fill the swearbox now :D
Fixed :D
, In a galaxy far far away..... things work as expected.Quote:

sorry clunk.
On that budget, you would be better off with this... http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=256335
Seasonic = Quality and Reliability, you can run this flat out and it won't break. Better to have a lower capacity, higher quality PSU, a than a "high" output cheapie and for your requirments, this should do nicely.

This looks good to me, cheap too. I am trying to build a new system so this is low on my spend list, as long as it works I don't care. I haven't chosen the GFX card I will be using yet prob won't be for another 2 months when I buy that, I will be using only one card - can't justify spending another 150-200 squid on a second for c/fire.
thanks for input.
Just fitted a Seasonic 330W (in a few days it will be joined by an Asus AMD 690G board and AMD Brisbane CPU, so not much power needed) in place of a 380W Antec - the draw from the mains, at idle, has gone down from 109W to 91W and the air from the PSU is cool rather than warm.
I hadn't realised how much difference a good PSU could make!
Peter.
Makes me laugh somtimes when people over exaggerate power consumption needs! its ridiculous.
e.g
Person 1: " I got an X2, 1 x 160 HB, 3 x 120mm Fans 1 Dvd-RW... ETC"
Person 2: "Hmm... Think you will need a Enermax Nuclear"
Person 1: "Whats that"
Person 2: "Well its a PSU which has a Nuclear reactor built-in"
-----------------------------------------------------------
Im running...
E6400 @ 3.2Ghz
Asus P5B-E Plus
2 Gigs of RAM
2 x 120mm & 1 x 140mm fan
Zalman Fan Controller
2 x Hitachi HD in R0
1 DVD-RW
1 Asus 7300GS GFX
All of a Silverstone ST230NF 300w PSU, at time of spec i was thinking of getting a 7900GS - Which the have been well withing the capablilty of the PSU but i didnt due to DX10 Cards coming out.
