On-board audio chip broken?

Hi all, I've just changed my case and several fans. But after the immigration my sound is gone. I can still find "C-Media AC97 Audio Device" in the hardware monitor, but no sound at all. Moreover, I've tried to boot from Ubuntu Live CD with the same result. Can anybody suggest a way to diagnose a broken audio chip? Thanks a lot!

plug in the speakers?

I guess if its in Device Manager and not working it may well be broke.

When you go to control panel and sound..can you still change its properties? thats all I can think of at the moment.
