Asus P5N-E SLI 650i PCIe Question?

I'm about to start building a new rig, have decided to use this Asus for various reasons. However I will likely never use its SLI abilities, so I was wondering if it's possible to use the second 16x PCIe slot with a regular 1x PCIe card?

This may be a stupid question, only i'm sure i read once that it was possible. Could be wrong though

it should be but then you'll be running your gfxcard at x8 instead of x16.
Depending upon what you run & at what res etc. this may or may not have an effect on performance.
