Sounds like it's kakked.
Try it with different DVDs and CDs and see what happens, if it fails to read anything then it's dead assuming that it was working before and you haven't changed anything.

I think I know how to fix this...the CDROM in my mum's laptop stopped working the other day, came up with something about it not being connected. There's a registry edit that worked for me first time, I was amazed.
1. Click Start, then Run, then enter REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor
2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class entry
3. Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the UpperFilters entry
5. Make sure the UpperFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
6. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the LowerFilters entry
7. Make sure the LowerFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
8. Close the Registry Editor by clicking File, Exit.
Let me know if it works.

can u explain the uppefilter nd lower cuz when i click once theres nothing that says those 2 filters....
also its not recognising cd's either it just spins for a few secs then stops and tries again 3 times then stops completely
could it be due to maybe auto exec file been deleted off my pc thru spyware?
-
you went to the right place in the registry yes? Those should probably be there, they are on mine. Have another look...i have no idea about the autoexec thing but I doubt it as the cd is not being read at all rather than it not just popping up on screen.
-
nope no where in there is upper filter or lower mate

How old is the drive? the laser may have just given up the ghost. You can pick up new dvd writers for £20, just buy a new one.
-
Can you not stick it in another computer and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'd give up and buy a new one. Like barker967 says they're only ~£20.
It has suffered from a bad firmware upgrade by any chance?
-
i havent even upgraded the firmware tbh, and i put it into my dads propper ****ty pc and it reads the disk just not on my pc :/
ive had it nearly 2 yrs now
could it be anything to do with jumper setting for master slave? and if its a primary ide or secondary becuz i have a sata hdd?
im gna try using a cd cleaner cd
-
Set the drive to master make sure it's plugged into the connector on the end of the cable.
If there's another drive on the same cable then the other has to be a slave and plugged into the middle connector.
I always set my drives to CS (cable select) and then which connector you plug it into determines whether the drive is a master or slave.

After reconnecting the drive as suggested, you can try uninstalling the drivers and letting windows redetect the drive:
Right click 'My Computer'
'Properties'
'Advanced'
'Environment Variables'
'New'
For 'Variable name:' type, devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
For 'Variable value:' type, 1
'OK'
'OK'
'Hardware'
'Device Manager'
'View'
Select 'Show hidden devices'
Expand 'DVD/CD-ROM drives'
Right click and 'Uninstall' all entries for the device.
Reboot and let windows reinstall the drive.
Don't know if it'll help but maybe worth a go.
