What hard drive?

Hi,

I have a Macpro and i'm looking to upgrade my hard drive. The two in question are....

320GB Deskstar T7K500
or
320 Gb Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10

I'm also open to other recommendations.

Apple normally use Seagate drives in their systems, but i've noticed that IBM/Hitachi have been top for ages in Custom PC's recommended hard drive section.

Really what i want is a cool drive quiet drive. But would be good to know which drive is faster?

just so you know, seagate are always quietest, and NEVER BY A HITACHI DESKSTAR!!!!!!

it may have been top on some review, but how long have they been veiwing it for? they cant test its life.

my dad fits CCTV systems for shops and that, and most of his DVRs come with hitachi drives. about 50% of the drives failed within 6months after their warantee ran out (1 or 2 were still under warantee though)

this is because they are being written to, and constently overwrited 24/7 for years!, and hatachi drives just dont last long enough. no seagate and maxtor drives (now the same company) that he used hav yet failed, however, the oldest one used was only 3 years ago. still, its deffinately better!

Frankly, you've either never owned anything other than Seagate, or are simply lying. If you checked, the 7200.10s in particular are anything but guaranteed to be quiet. They have 2 countries outputting what is essentially 2 totally different drives. 1 is extremely loud, the other quite quiet. Both are having worrying failure rates.

The WD KS series is much quieter than either of the 2 Seagate 7200.10s productions, as are most Samsung SpinPoints.

You'll be recommending Maxtors next...

As for Deathstars, they're nothing like what they used to be, but I would struggle to recommend one too.

Both drives are fast - the TK series from hitachi are quite fast, though the 320 7200.10 is also a good drive.

I have the latter and can confirm it's a virtually silent drive - it's not as whisper quiet as the samsung spinpoint with acoustic management enabled, but what little noise there is is a very pleasant low pitched clunking sound.

I would (and did) take the seagate drive out of preference, though you can't really go wrong with either.

in my system i currently have two seagates, one maxtor, and one deskstar! so i think im qualified enough to give my feedback!!!

maxtor is loudest for me. my old seagate, ive never ever heard make a noise unless i had my head in the case, so i know that was quiet, and ive heard the quietest drives there are are mainly seagates!

anyway, this was not the point of the post, i was mainly saying, dont buy hitachi deskstars

OK, fair enough, perhaps I was a bit strong, but the fact remains that Seagate are certainly not "always quietest".

Out of those two I would go for Seagate but if I were you I would invest in a Samsung Spinpoint they are super quiet and match the speeds of the Seagates

Oops bit late, just read you have ordered. You chose the best hard disk out the two though I see. Very good.
