Playing HD content smoothly (with NVIDIA® PureVideo™ ???)

hi, i have the following specs...

Athlon 64 3200
2x512 Dual channel corsair twinX
4 HDD's - total capacity = 930GB
Geforce 6600GT 128MB DDR3, AGP


the problem is, im having trouble being able to play HD material smoothly. 720p or over just wont play smoothly!

this applies mainly for H.264, (off apple.com/trailers ...etc) but i kno mpeg2 and wmv have the same performance.

i thought my system would be powerful enough to play this kinda stuff, but evidently, not.

thing is, i saw something on the nVidia website called purevideo. it suggests my graphics card can use its own hardware to produce a smooth video output of hd material. it doesnt seem to be working though. i would like to know how i can get it to do it. how can i get my video card to hardware accelerate my HD material.

i was able to play 1080i high-def stuff alright on my old a64 3000+/1gb ram/6600gt rig using the purevideo codec.

ran fine for me.

I have no problem running hi-def stuff on a system slower than that (3000 AMD64 and a 6800GS), so it sounds like an issue your end.

my old Media PC ran HD fine using onboard 6150 gfx with FFDShow, Matroska and quicktime alternative.

Your codecs could be the problem.

Im assuming you are not using a HD-DVD drive or Blu-Ray as these require a X2 3800 Minimum to run properly

and whats wrong with my system then?? why isnt it working.
i used to run evrything with ffd show before, and it still wasnt smooth, matroska files too.

and ive had a reinstall of windows recently, that didnt make any difference!

Your drivers are a little out of date. I had the same problem with some old forceware drivers. Don't remember the exact numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if it was your version.

For h.264, coreAVC usually is the most resource efficient - although its not free...

Nor is Purevideo. Install that and make sure your media player is using it, and that DXVA is enabled - you should get 1080i mpeg2 playing fine using that system.

720p h264 will be ok probably, with either CoreAVC and it's software decoding, or PowerDVD with it's hardware decoding (though not sure if the 6600 supports h264 DXVA).

thanx skin, that worked great! all mpeg2 and h264 content plays fine now, even WMV which i dont remember being stated as supported by purevideo.

PROBLEM is though, h264 quicktime files still dont play well, as....
quicktime doesnt support hardware decoding as apple are gay and think their software is the best and rely on it for everything!
...quicktime alternative doesnt support DXVA (i dont think)
...power dvd and windows media player play the quicktime files with PERFECT video output, but no sound. i have AAC codecs installed, so i don't kno whyy.

Hmm.

Maybe try to install ffdshow and config it to pick up the aac streams?

Not sure as I used MPC and Quicktime stream plays fine in that for me. I use Quicktime Alt to save them to the HDD under the .hdmov extension, so maybe even try to rename them and see what works - according to the QT Alt program using .hdmov as the extension gives greater compatibility with the directshow filters.

Look up the CCCP codec pack, it's a stripped down pack of codecs including a cleaned-up ffdshow build, and their site talks about Quicktime Alternative as a better player. I don't use QT files but they definitely refer to them.

I'm having a similar problem - can't play .ts files live from a DVB-T card (the BBC HD Freeview trial off Crystal Palace transmitter), or if they're recorded. The video judders and the audio is out of sync. I've got a C2D E6600, 2GB DDR2-800 and 7900GX2 graphics card so it's not my spec! Must have a driver conflict somewhere, think a reinstall is due...
