Smal budget system

I have a friend who jsut wants something simple that he can do some photo work, word docs and internet on.

Budget is about £200 and I want to build him something simple but solid.

Is it cheaper to hit PC world or build it myself?

Someone like dell may be able to help at that sort of price..prehaps the outlet or a reconditioned one.

You could build for that kind of money if you really wanted to..something like this:

AMD 3600 x2 = £45
1gb of pc5400 RAM = £25
Abit NF-M2S WiFi = £50 (onboard gfx and wifi)
160gb HD + DVD writer = £50
Asus Case + 300w psu = £30

all from scan and rough prices

obviously you will need the software though..

idd stay clear of pc world - dell have good offers, and you can build your own - but i doubt you could get a monitor on that kinda budget

I like the idea of linux, but people eventually want to install their own programs and if they aren't above average in the computer skills department they might struggle.

To install a program you simply open up the package manager, search for the program either by name or use eg word processor and it comes up with a list of programs which are all free of cost.

Then you just press install and it does everything for you.

100 times easier than windows especially for a beginner.

Everything on Ubuntu is so much easier and simple than windows - it just works.

You can't put in a disk and install a program you want can you tho? Like a mainstream game or program. E.g would CPU-Z work on ubuntu?

It's OK if you know what your doing, but windows compatability is alot better and people know and trust windows (largely).

Yeh but if you dont want to do it yourself and have some assurance when it goes wrong its win win, and your not feeding a big corp

With the Google Checkout promo you can get an extra 10 quid off!! Since this discount applies to any items over 30 quid you could order the bits in several batches and use the discount several times!! Hence you could easily the get the price down to around 200 quid altogether!!

This system should be good enough for everyday tasks. Although a dual core and a gig of RAM is nice a Sempron 3000 AM2 and 512mb RAM will suffice for most things and will do them reasonably speedily!! Since the power drain of this sytem will also be low the 350w generic PSU in the case should also suffice too!! The system should consume well under 200w at 100% load anyway and it is unlikely it would be taxed to this extent though!!
