Fried XP1700+

Bought an XP1700+ JIUHB on Ebay and installed it in a brand new straight-out-of-the-box NF7 (non-S) with 2 x 256mb DDR400. Booted into BIOS, set the multiplier to 11 and the FSB to 133, set the ratio for DDR400 (yes, I know this was stupid, should have kept the ratio synchronous), then saved CMOS. Screen went blank and I got no further life out of this cpu/mobo combination. After days of messing about I RMA'd the mobo to Redstore (who were excellent). After getting my replacement mobo I tried the XP1700+ again but still dead. Installed an XP1800+ T'bred A and this works just fine, so it was the cpu that died, not the mobo (sorry, Redstore!). Question is, why did it die? The HSF was installed correctly and when I checked the temps in BIOS the cpu was only like 28 deg or something.
Anyway, thought I'd just post my story to see if anyone has had a similar experience, or any clues as to what I did wrong.
The XP1700+ is going to be sold on as a keyfob - I've got a buyer for £5.00 plus p&p!

i wouldnt've thought you could kill a chip just by setting it at a clockspeed to high, did you try resetting the bios etc. or taking the cpu out, and putting it back, so that the motherboard would set everything back to defaults?

only other thing would be if the HSF wasnt properly attached, but you said you got into the bios and the temps were fine...

Try booting with insert held - just an off chance it'll work.

Perhaps if the CPU did die, it took the first mobo with it - so the RMA was needed nonetheless.

maybe u were sold a duff cpu on ebay? making the mobo seem dead

because it didnt work on the old one or the new, if u'd have tried the xp1800 in the one u thought was broken, u cudda told if it was the mobo or cpu

When first installed the XP1700+/NF7 booted straight into BIOS, so at that time it was working. After saving BIOS settings it died. The cpu speed was correct in BIOS after I changed it ie 11 x 133. The only mistake I made that I'm aware of was that I set the DRAM ratio to run the memory at 400mhz with a fsb of 133, as I didn't realise that for best performance from an Athlon you need cpu and memory running at the same speed (on my Intel systems I usually have run the memory at a much faster FSB speed than the cpu).
After the failure I tried everything I could think of, reseating everything, clearing CMOS etc but never got back into BIOS. At the time I didn't have another AMD cpu to try. I got the XP1800+ later (also from Ebay) so that I had an alternative cpu when the new mobo arrived from Redstore.
I didn't try pressing the insert key when powering up, will try that next chance I get - what is that supposed to do?

insert should set the motherboard to default clock settings (fsb and multiplier) for your CPU, i cant see how you killed it, but i'll gladly buy it for a fiver hehe - there is just too much chance that it'll work.

Well, I'll give it more more go, then I've already promised it to someone for £5.00. Mind if he gets it working there'll be much wailing and gnashing of teeth....
