    Question Athlon 64 X2 Socket 939

Little did I imagine 12 months ago that AMD would drop the Socket 939 architecture quite so quickly!

Am I correct in thinking that AMD has completely stopped production of the Athlon 64 X2 CPU in S939??

    Many thanks.

The CPU stay on idle around 34 C the only thing is heating it up is CoH 42C , in Fow and DOOM 3 stay around 39C, on FEAR 38C and overclocked to 2.4ghz could rich 48C on 3 h load but this is with the boxed cooler.
MBO chipset is around 38 -40 C with ZALMAN above cooper based default cooler and fixed with a wire + thermal compound between them ofcourse. I have just a side case cooler and Thermal take PSU 500w with 120mm fan.
ALL temps measured with scythe temp controler v. good stuff anyway.
The ABIT MBO are reliable now days and in my opinion worth every penny.

    Question

    Thanks guys.

My current CPU is an Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego core). I use my rig mostly for gaming and web development/design. Don't use it for watching TV or DVDs. Plan to do some music transfers from vinyl and tape sometime soon though - perhaps it would be good for that??

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Stick with the single core for now, then upgrade the CPU & motherboard & RAM when you know you need to (ie when one day you launch your application of choice and it no longer works / plays quickly enough).
This may, or may not, be an Intel Core2Duo based system, depending on when that time comes, but will almost certainly be in the 400 to 500 quid range.

I'm also of the opinion you should stick with it as much as you are able - gaming goes off the gfx card more. When it does get long in the tooth have a look on ebay and you should be able to find some second hand X2s that you can drop in cheaply, to tide you over for a bit longer and more products are available.

well it has been more than a year, I got mine in Jan last year, I'm pretty sure thats when they were just released. But yeah they did drop it though. As for an opteron 146, the dual core still beats the single core. I have a 144 running at 2.6ghz, opening a game takes longer than on the dual core. I found multitasking is longer, ie tabbing out of a game to browse the internet wasn't as fast. I'm pretty sure the x2 beats the optys in most tests too. unless they are dual core too.

but my 3800+ is quite comfortable at 2.4Ghz, would do more but mobo only allows an fsb up to 240mhz. so that wouldnt be an upgrade, if i was to upgrade i would want something with a much higher multiplier like a real 4600, and if i was using AM2 that would be no trouble at all, about £80. but id have to pay over £150 for a 939 one, which is silly, cheaper to sell off proccy mobo and mem and go to AM2, which would be silly as i may as well go to core2 if i was to do that.

    it would?
so, how much would I get for my x2 4200, 4 x 512MB of Geil Ram and an Asus A8n32 mobo :O
i doubt i'd be able to get a good mobo back, i'd have to spend a bit more on the ram too.

yep, if i sold what i had and added the £70 difference between the am2 and the 939 versions of the processor i would have enough to buy ddr2 rather than ddr, and a am2 mobo rather than a 939. infat i think i may make a profit on the mobo as 939 MATX's are pretty scarce now and got some interest when i as considering selling. ddr mem is more expensive than ddr2 now (new anyway).

I upgraded from a opty 146@2.6gig - vista definately handles multiple cores better than xp does.. even tho vista was pretty sweet before, its just alot snappier now..

Not done much games testing, but i can now run C&C3 maxed out @1600x1200 where before i kept it at 1280 because of slowdowns in the later missions with the AI..

the ones on ebuyer are toledo core, mine is currently running at 2.8gig, stock volts. will do 3gig with a small voltage bump but my HSF starts to struggle

I bought it because its the only item letting my machine down.. and i didnt want the huge outlay of ddr2, new mobo etc.. this machine will do me for at least another year+ now
