nForce southbridge RAID - 120mb/s bottleneck?

Is there truely a 120mb/s bottleneck in RAID setups using the current Nvidia MCP southbridge?

I just read the article at tomshardware:

is the Nvidia page, but you've got to read the rest of the article to get the full story

Basically though, the nvidia southbridge maxes out at 120mb/s on a 4xRaptor setup in RAID0 and RAID5 setups, whereas on the intel southbridges, they hit 350 and 240 respectively

If so, I might stick with a 965/975 and sacrifice SLI for raid.

Or, here's a better idea, buy a real RAID controller and have no software bottlenecks? or a soft-RAID controller that doesn't have crummy drivers? There's absolutely no sense replacing an entire motherboard for a niggly 'feature'. Remember all onboard RAID controllers are simply SATA controllers with a RAID BIOS strapped on, all the real work is done on the CPU.

the only time i have had any raid fail in a short time is when disks have failed.the controllers they use must be crap.

The controller isn't the problem, its crap drivers.

I've Had Nvidia NF4 Software RAID (In windows) which ran at 240MB/s. May be use the Windows Soft-raid instead of Nvidia?

That way you get to migrate to another motherboard without losing anything, as well as able to check SMART of your HDDs

Driver is a major problem with software RAID, and those company don't really put in a lot of resources to "bug-fix" the RAID driver.

Personally I think software RAID5 make it less reliable than JBOD.
