I've been looking for a good utility/program that'll convert .rm files to .avi with little loss in quality. I dont mind paying if its worth the extra or there really is no free one that'll do it well. any recommendations?
thanks!

First Google search came up with http://www.rmconverter.com/
I wouldnt advise converting RM files to AVI though as past expierience is that it does come out quite pixelated.
.rm files are usually quite low file size and quality are they not?
How about SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html) converts just about anything, to just about anything else.
Why do you want to do this anyway? There may be another way round it, rather than transcoding.
Fair enough. If it was a problem with playing them through perticular software in Windows, i was going to recomend the RealAlternative package that installs DirectShow filters for RM files, letting you play them in any DirectShow software
But of course, that won't work with standalone hardware
it has its roots as the first usable cross-platform system for streaming multimedia content over the net - even back in the dial-up days
quicktime and divx are very different beasts, as they're not streaming-centric (quicktime can be a little now, but isn't popular for it)
a better comparison is windows media, which has been known to compete with realmedia in the same space (via the mms protocol) - in which case the reason is obvious, where windows media needs windows, and realmedia works on windows or mac or beos or x86 linux
Flash is probably a much stronger competitor to RealMedia than any of the others.
