Sound only from one program at a time.

I am using onboard sound of my Gigabyte DS3p.

On my old NF7-s onboard soundd, and even budget c-media card, I could play 2 separate video files/audio/programs and have both of them play the audio. so i get 2 sounds coming out at the same time.

At the moment, only one program at a time can play audio.

So for example if I'm playing a video file on windows media player to look at a youtube video i'd get no sound, even if I pause the media player.

    anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a directsound problem, try running the 'dxdiag' program, if it shows a problem with directsound, a DX update might sort it out.
