Let's hope amd don't do this too. and i bet all you guys who got c2d have overclocked. i'd say its unfair on the guys with extreme editions of the cpu, where intel do say its highly overclockable and leave the multiplier unlocked for a reason. very ironic.
there cheap as chips these days anyhow :p

returns cost money and if you owned Intel (apart from being extremely rich) on a business point of view would you try to limit your returns?
there will always be a grey spot in OC hardware and the limit to were you can send it for replacement, I personally think it is quite reasonable. I mean if the gaming and OC community was not as big as it is now then would this issue arise?
Why is this disturbing? I thought it was pretty obvious that overclocking was running your CPU out of spec therefore voided the warranty? Obvously warranties are a bit more forgiving that I thought.
If SCAN could confirm mild overclocking does not violate the warranty on the AMD X2 I'll get going right away!
Overclocking any other part of the system voids it's warranty. I think people forget that overclocking is a risk and on your head be it when things explode.
Also it is EXTREMEMLY hard to cook a C2D, but if you go wading in giving it 1.8v on stock cooling it's your own dumb fault. Most can hit reasonable speeds undervolted.
Even if you are stupid enough to do something like this they have termal protection, which kicks in sharpish.
you just said overclocking voided warranty. how mild is mild. 0.1 - 10mhz is the amount my cpu jumps sometimes so anything over that is overclocking i guess and therefore voiding the warranty. but i dont think you will be refused an rma if you overclock with the x2's. as long as you dont bust it by overclocking then its fine. mine developed a temperature problem and it got rma'ed fine.Quote:

to be honest, has anyone heard of someone being refused a cpu rma for this reason? I think they probably have a fairly lax attitude towards this. Saying that, I completely agree with Paul - it's fair enough that you overclock your cpu, but taking it too far and then trying to get a new one for free is just greed, and you could hardly expect any company to agree with that :)
Personally, my golden rule with overclocking and modding in general was always "if you can't afford a new one, don't touch it".
